Default Modding Cord for 8500 x50

Hi everyone i just bought the 8500 x50 (had a bell 980 about 4-5 years ago and it went cal3 message after 1 year). I would like to make the cord longer so it can reach from my cig lighter to the rearview mirror can i just cut the end off and use a telephone wire to make it longer?

    Thanks in advance

    Chris

I needed to make my cord longer so I used a black telephone line coupler and a black telephone cord. This kept me from having to cut cords and gave me enough length to hide the cord in the roof liner, A pillar, and dashboard. You could also get a cigarette lighter extension or Y adapter too depending on how much extra length you need. The Y adapter would also allow you to use another device too like a cell phone charger as an added bonus.

Wow thanks for the fast replies!!!! I never thought of just buying a female to femle piece at radio shack that would make things a lot easier if i ever needed to sell it. I have a y adapter for my cig lighter but i blew the fuse in it try blow up my tire. Even though i do like to solder things and watch the tubes shrink plus i wouldn't have to leave the house... oh what to do

No i'm sorry i dont have my 980 anymore just threw it away a couple of months ago because as soon as you turn it on it would say cal3 so i took it apart trying to see if i could fix it. Not being able to fix it i got pissed because i paid like $280 for it so i threw it on the gound then in the trash. Then i cursed Bel but now after reading the forums all day today i find out Escort bought them .... So i hope i just didn't throw my money way.

Yep, that's exactly what I did. I didnt want to cut the factory cord. I wired it up by my rearview and tucked the cable in the A Pillar. I did order the direct wire cable from Bell. But I am quickly realizing that I like having the mute button on the cig plug accessible so I can get to it easily. The phone couplers work fine though.
