View Poll Results: A new laser-only detector -- would you buy it?
Definitely yes -- if it blew away the V1's laser detection!

No -- I would rather put my money towards a jammer installation.
Well, as we all know, the ZR4 is excellent at detecting laser. The laser detection modules inside the ZR4 front heads are rather compact as well and are only 1/4" tall, maybe 1" wide, and around 1-1/4" in depth. Years ago several RD manufacturers marketed laser-only detectors to compliment existing radar detectors with the advent of laser guns. I think that it would be really cool if Escort marketed a laser-only detector to compliment both Bel's and Escort's existing windshield mount radar detectors. Such a device should also feature a combination of a wedge and cylindrical case molded condenser lens which can "see" both ahead and also "see" laser scatter off of the front of your car's hood.
Features:
-- It should feature dual ZR4 laser detection modules for both front and rear detection.
-- It should be USB updatable for any new laser gun modulations which come out.
-- It should feature dual RJ-11 plugs and come with a mini RJ-11 cable so that it could be attached to the underside of existing Bel/Escort radar detectors so that it is powered by the existing RD power cord yet has the jumper cable to also power the RD.
-- It should be able to "talk" to the Bel or Escort radar detector in order to display laser alerts using the RD's display since it will not have its own built-in display.
-- Finally, it should measure no more than 2-1/2" wide, 4" long, and 1/2" in height, making it ideal for mounting underneath any Bel or Escort windshield mount radar detector.
The idea is to have significantly better-than-V1 laser detection capabilities, both front and rear.

Better laser detection than the V1 sounds cool, but you'd probably be getting laser falses like crazy. Unless belscort made it to where it was looking for specific pulse rates and was able to filter out the laser guided cruise controls like the LI can.
I'd rather have a defense against laser if it's used on my car though, rather than trying to pick it up way ahead of time.

I don't really see the point of such a thing. I wouldn't buy it. In fact, I wish they'd start making high-end RDs without laser again.
I remember when lidar first came out, some companies were making stand-alone laser detectors and add-on laser modules for existing RDs. Now that we have discovered how useless lidar detection is, maybe having separate devices is a good idea to return to.

No thanks, the ZR4s false way too much for my tastes. This is the main reason I now have them deactivated and have added the LIs to my setup.

Yet if falsing were greatly reduced? Thats just got to simply be an algorithm and filtering sort of thing...

Everyone knows that LIDAR detection is pretty much worthless - the cop has your speed by the time your detector goes off. A jammer is an absolute must!

While I also voted *NO* I do not share these sentiments. Lidar DETECTION is important, but not as much as jamming.
And here is my reasoning as to WHY lidar detection is important:
#1 if you don't detect it, you can't jam it!
#2 A good lidar receiver will detect lidar scatter from far away, giving you time to slow down BEFORE he targets YOUR car.
#3 Lidar detection, even without a jammer can be invaluable for reason #2 AND it gives you awareness of where traps MAY be the next time you drive through unknown territory.
However I feel jammers do a good job at detection already and a receiver only would only have value to jammer manufacturers.

I'm curious, by turning off laser on my 9500ix since I now have the LI Dual en route and once installed, would this in any way benefit radar detection?

I highly doubt it would make a noticeable difference, probably none at all.

Yeah I figured as much, thanks dj.
btw I should have my LI tomorrow
