does anyone know if you can get a 12v adapter @ Radio Shack or someplace similar rather than ordering one from Escort?

Yep! The Radio Shack 22-505 adapter ($30) is fully regulated and is safe to use for powering any radar detector. Here is a link so that you know what you are looking for at your local Radio Shack:

^^ Thanks MEM, so $30 at RS or $20 plus shipping and wait from Escort.
Will this update be undoable?
