    Default Expert mode helps again

On the West end of the Indiana Toll Road, 1 mile before the toll booth, there is a sign that shows your speed, and this time there was a LEO just after it. It was good I had my X50 in expert mode as I saw both a K and an X this time. In this spot its only 55 mph where just a mile before it's 70. I guess he was going for his quota early this month.

Anyone else notice how those signs sometimes have terrible errors in speed? I noticed that particular one showing me at 54 when I was doing 70 a couple of weeks ago, and I was alone at that point.

Did you get beep and brap, then steady braps? I found the audio quite good on the X50 but never got a retrospectively controlled situation such as this.

If the signals where on at the same time as you approach the source, the stronger signal overides the weaker signal. In my experience, the K band alert most of the time overides the the X band in multiple source situation. The audio in the X50 is very good as far as distinguishing the kind of band alerts you encounter compared to my V1.

That would be a hell of an error wouldn't it? Acually, my speedometer error is -2 mph at 80, according to my GPS.

Or they purposely set it low so people drive faster. Maybe I'm seeing black helicopters but you never know. I wouldn't put it past ISP so that they can get their monthly quotas easier. (Oh! I forgot!. They don't have quotas. hahahahahaha)

You know? I've not relied on sound on the X50. I have it just above the mirror so since I'm always looking up there, I look at the detector face. At this point I can only distinguish the sound of a laser alert and Ka alert, but I don't notice the difference between X and K. That's probably because I expect a LEO with a laser and Ka alert, although I've not had a real LEO laser alert yet, AFAIK.

I don't even remember before whether the sign was K or X. What I did notice right away were 2 alerts on the detector window.

In your original post, you said you saw the K and X alert. The X band will give you a high pitch "beep" sound and the k band will give you a "brap" sound like billgerr said. It takes getting use to it and overtime, you'll know the different sound alerts.

If you are new to using radar detectors, DO NOT RELLY ON IT TOO MUCH. Be alert at all times by looking farther down the road, know where the traps are, always use a blocker in front of you and look once in a while in your rear view mirror. LEO always has the advantage when properly equiped and no RD's can't stop it when you have a seasoned radar operator. Of course, the best thing to do is stay within speed limits.

Just a couple of quick points:

I think on the X50, when there is more than one bogey, the audio alert priorities are Ka first, K second, X last. In other words, if there is both an X and a K, you'll get the audio (and display in non-expert mode) for the K bogey.

If the speed sign was set up too far off the road, or at an angle to the traffic, cosine error could have caused the inaccurate speed readings. Though it would have to have been a pretty steep angle to read 70 as 55.
If I'm passing you on the right, YOU are in the wrong lane!

If speed kills, how come I'm still alive?

    Right on the dot.
