I was wondering why you think my detection was so awful behind this plastic grill that you could see right through.
I don't know for sure what was the reason for bad performance in your case, but I know that thicker the grille is,further away the receiver must be mounted and vice-versa.In your case,9500ci had tunnel vision thru the grille, which could cause the radar signals entering in 9500ci's antenna to be out-of-phase and that would seriously deteriorate 9500ci's performance.

Keep the metal flame burning!!! http://www.metalstorm.ee/forum/index.php
^ Agreed - I think that a precise cause will continue to elude our analysis, until more in-depth research has been done on this issue.
However, in addition to the above suggestion by MetalFlame, we also do have certain outright knowledge-holes in this particular assessment - we don't really know what other materials/finishes your particular grill, dj, consist(s) of.....

Although it should be polymer-plastic, it's still possible that the finish and/or its core - or even part of its constituency - may run afoul of some of these very concerns listed.
Similarly, looking back at the way MEM-TEK dissected the issue of thestaton's vehicle grill, on page 3 of that reference thread.
There simply may be underlying issues that caused your difficulties, that are not clear at the present time, with what little we know.

Although, it's not that big of a deal to me anymore. I put a big hole in the grille and VOILA! Works great! If others want to continue to mount their radar antennas behind stuff, that's cool by me. I'll just keep warning them. That's all I can do. After that, it's their call. You won't ever see me do that again though. I've learned my lesson. as Lucky225 says, the hard way. Mustang GT Convertible, 9500ci, Veil, V1 3.812 hardwired with X and K off, Laser Interceptor Quad. 9500ix confiscated by the woman and hardwired high in her car.
I've got some stories to tell (all from today)
Morning rush hour:
34.9xx 9500ci alerted first, Naperville PD moving squad car on the opposite side of the road
Going to Lunch:
Ka 35.495: 9500ci alerts first, goes to show me my speed, then instantly switches to laser. An unmarked dark blue Naperville PD Dodge Magnum is on the side street (12th) with his drivers window down. This is a 5 lane section one road where the speed limit is 30mph (Washington), and the cops love to sit. I'm not sure if he had dash mounted Ka pointed straight and then hit me with laser, or what was happening, but it was odd. Down at the light, the V1 continued on Ka rear, and when I turned the 9500ci back on it was alerting to 35.495, and I was about 5 ft from the car in front of me. When the light turned green and the car in front pulled away, the 9500ci stopped alerting, and the V1 continued Ka rear for another 10 sec or so.
Red is when the V1 alerted to 35.5, Blue is when the 9500ci alerted to 35.5. The big gap is becuase I killed it due to it starting to jam.
Back from Lunch:
Sitting at a light, the right lane is ending up ahead in about 100ft, I'm in the left lane. Little blue prius is back in the right lane hanging back. He tries to time the light to get a roll on me while I'm stopped. I gun it first and make him slam on his brakes to get behind me. I should have thrown my hazards on .
Evening rush hour
K 24.178. I was at a light perpendicular to a major road, there is a shopping plaza across the street, so depending on traffic I occasionally pick up K. Well I notice that the frequency seems kind of high, I remember it being 24.122 or something, so I'm suspicous. The 9500ci isn't ramping up, just a steady beep, so I mute it. The V1 then starts beeping K, and ramps up to full strength. Arrows switch and do all the fancy stuff the V1 is great for as the LEO rolls by.

By far, the most exciting was killing that prius.
24.178 seems super high to be a real threat, but it can be depending on the calibration of the gun.

I really don't understand Prius drivers.
Why do they even think that their cars are something else? Why can't they just be proud of what they bought the car for?
"Prius Racing" or "Racing Prius" has become such the joke among the auto-enthusiast community, that it's not even funny any more.....
Got rid of the yellow gauges today, decided to go with black, mainly because it hides the display the best.
I also had a K band IO encounter with the Oswego Patrol Sargent. We were both going the same direction, he was in his Explorer driving down rt 30, maybe 1/4 mile ahead with 3 cars between us. He kept turning on his radar as cars would past in the opposite direction. With this the V1 and 9500ci alerted at the same exact time, where as with all other K the 9500ci alerts way before. I going to turn POP on and see if it makes a difference.
