    Default Maybe a dumb question??

I've got a 9500i red coming in the mail, it will be here tomorrow. As is usual for me, it is used. I am fairly sure the ramp up will be the old style. I have already set up an account and downloaded the Detector Tools and update. Now, when I update it, does that fix the ramp-up or do I need to send it in?

The reason I ask is that on the download page for the update it says "Improved meter ramping". Is that the ramp-up update???

Depends on who asnwers this question for the answer you will get. A lot of people have said that it does improve the ramp up but others have said that their detection has gone down in distance with the ramp up improving. I have not updated mine and it works great, the ramp up is fine. The only problem with the ramp up that I would complain about is it will go from (in expert mode) 2 dots to four and peak fast but since I have been using it for a while I am used to the little quirks that come with it. So to answer your question yes that update comes with the ramp up improvement

Ok, that sounds like a potentially bad tradeoff! I have already owned 2 9500is, one red and one blue, and have not been impressed at all with the detection range. The red was early 2007, the blue was 5007, my S7 X50s blew both of them away on K band detection (about 80% around here). I sold them both, so I guess I hope this one will impress me.

In the few cases that this has been reported, a "hard reset" rectified the problem.

A "hard reset" is now recommended, from the likes of MEM-TEK, after any updating.

Ramp up only fixes rather old 9500I's. Does not affect sensitivity, just the perception of it.
IMO, the S7's have a slight advantage on K band depending on the modes set, and the 9500I M4's are better on KA.

I'm inclined to agree, based on the performance of my old S7 Rev5 x50.

    It's highly situational-dependent, too.

X2, my 8500 non X50 is still pretty darn good on K band, but i would never use it instead of my 9500I.

On what level does that make the slightest bit of sense?

Well, it does. This one seems to be a lot more sensitive on K band, which is my biggest threat here. Don't know about Ka band yet. After owning literally hundreds of detectors, NO 2 are ever the same, so my premise does indeed make sense.

By the way, I did the update via the USB cable. It would not work on my Vista computer, but worked fine on my XP. Ramp up is ok, not exactly X50 or V1-like but ok.

I guess, but how much better do you really think the same detector is going to get from one to the next? Certainly not significantly. Just seems to make more sense to buy a different model than to keep expecting different results out of the same detector.
