Depending on the application, you can even omit certain parts of the circuit. When I build this for my bike, I really don't care to have a power on led. If anything, i'll include a small pot so I can adjust the brightness as needed. Instead of led's, i'll be using some 168/194 style wedge led bulbs (bright as can be when viewed within the viewing angle).

Thinking of having a small box housing the circuit, a set of leads going to the power, another set going to the RD, and finally, perhaps a 1/8" mono jack with a lead going to the alert led's.
