    Default 9500ix on Visor

Does anybody have their 9500ix mounted on thier visor? Wondering if the GPS function will work if installed in this location. I am getting mixed information. Thanks.

Technically it shouldn't work well, and at best you my get inconsistent results.

"Will it work on the visor?"

Maybe yes. Maybe no. Maybe sometimes. Too many variables.

Some cars have electric running in the headliner area and it may influence the detector. Laser head may be covered (why Escort didn't put the laser head - or an alternate pickup on the bottom - is beyond me as when using it with their visor clamp. Steel headliner may cut off GPS signals. Too much visor material may cut down on GPS signal. Long time to get a GPS signal in visor position. Reflected laser light bounced off hood from atmosphic conditions might report false Laser hit.

    ...and so it goes.

I've tried mine on the visor of several rental cars and usually the GPS reception comes and goes. Basically, it doesn't work very well, at least not the GPS features. The radar detection portion works just fine up there.

Try it. Works fine for me. I actually have it mounted to the headliner, but it is fully under the metal roof. Never has a problem with GPS.
No different really than the garmin I also have mounted on the dash, also well inside from any view of the windshield.
Modern GPS receivers are very sensitive.

My car went into shop for service so I put my 9500ix on the visor of a loaner car today and some funky things were happening.

On expressway, as I was approaching a mini construction zone... as I found out later, the construction zone sign was generating K-band. I thought it was a LEO behind me somewhere as I was getting the strong K band alert for a bit then went off and came back on and so on.

About 200 yards before the sign 9500ix announced "mark this location?" on its own. And then it goes "marking location" then a few second later "unmark location?" "unmarking location" all on its own. As I'm now passing the sign it went thru the whole cycle of asking me to mark and then unmarking the location on its own again. About half mile ahead it starts to ask me "Unmark?" "Unmarking location" and then it goes "Ur.. Ur.. Unmar...Unmarking...ur.. ur... mark?... unmarking" like how CD mistracks.

On the way back home approaching the same area it went thru the whole cycle again but not exactly in the same sequence in reverse.... slightly different but somewhat the same. Also I got "Unmark...Unmarking..etc" randomly a few more times far beyond the fore mentioned construction zone....

I think it had something to do with intermittent GPS connection I was getting though I wasn't exactly paying attention as the unit was literally on the right side of my head.

Funky... I'll mount it on the windshield and see what happens tomorrow as I'll be driving thru the same area again.

Well.. today I mounted the 9500ix on the windshield. Right after I got on expressway.. as I was passing by one of my "Marked" speed trap location IX announced "Speed trap" and then it did that "Ur.. Unlock? Unlocked" again by itself. At this point I was starting to think that I might have to send it in for repair! This thing sounded like overloaded robot on old sci-fi movies.

When I got near the construction zone I mentioned yesterday IX alerted "K Band" then as I was approaching the construction info sign it announced something to the effect of "Lockout?" and then "Storing signal" then again "Ur..Unlock? Unlocked."

On the way back home ix worked perfectly without any hiccup at all. I'm thinking by mounting it on the visor yesterday maybe the stored marked location and new lock out locations (by the construction zone) got all messed up because of intermittent GPS signal. I'm assuming when I mounted it on the windshield today it was resetting the lockouts and marked locations...(?) We'll see whether the hiccup returns.

BTW one thing I suddenly noticed is that after each and every announcement there is a kind of ticking sound. I don't remember for sure but I don't think the sound was there before. For example "Ur - tick - Unlock? - tick - Unlocked - tick" or "Mark location? - tick - Location marked - tick." It's not a loud tick but, how should I say... kind of sounds like flicking fingernails? Kind of electrical ticking sound of ending one message(?) When ix was going thru the weird hiccup it was really noticeable as it was trying to say jumbled messages one after another continuously. So I paid attention to it today and it was doing it after every announcement. Could one of you with 9500ix verify this? On the way home it was raining (freezing rain) so I couldn't quite hear the ticks. Since now I'm noticing the ticking noise IT'S ANNOYING!

There is noise when the 9500ix alerts, crackling/pop? I notice it when its hooked up to my amplified speaker, not through internal speaker. Your scenario sounds different though. Try a hard reset.

Guys, clearly something is just pressing the buttons on top, and marking/unmarking locations as you hit bumps etc. If it is top-mounted, make sure nothing is near touching the top buttons.
