Default Passport 8500 - Self Cal / Service Required

We have two Passport 8500's, one in each of our cars. They are really a great unit - dependable, etc. We purchased them on eBay brand new, and as I can see now, that might be a mistake...

One of the units (the older one - now about 16 months old) is now flashing SELF CALIBRATION on the screen for about 3 minutes, then locks up with SERVICE REQUIRED. When I unplug the unit and plug it back in, it works for 5, 10 maybe even 30 minutes, but eventually does the self cal again.

Question, what can I do with this unit? I am already researching a new unit (probably not a escort/bell model just because of these types of issues I am reading about) - but I really just want MY unit fixed! Our cars are garaged 90% of the time and this even happens when the unit is "cool" (i.e. just pulling out of the garage).

Anyone have any advise of what I can do with it other than use it as a expensive paper weight?? Looking for others that have had this type of experience.. Thanks - and great site!!

Escort will fix it for either $50 or $60, I forget which.
