I'm a newbie, and have been running my 8500 X50 for 6 weeks now. The only X I see is door openers ( I think) Buddy has a Valentine and has his X band turned off for years. Anyone know if X band is still being used in N. California? Thanks

As far as I know, X-band isn't used at all in CA (at least down in San Diego). Turn X off, only turn it back on if you want to test your detector against flase sources to see its range. Don't turn off K though, there are some Sheriffs that still use K guns. I think X is more common near the Oregon border, at least I've heard rumors about it up there. No X in the Bay Area or Sacramento, they all mainly have Ka units. If you go down to Mexico, they might have X LOL
Thanks very much. I love this forum! Great having people from all over the country help me avoid tickets. Do I understand correctly. You use X on falses to check range? (Like grocery store doors?) Once again, thanks!
Eh, I wouldn't use X to test a detector's range. Range varies by band. Your garden variety Crapra may have 5 miles of range on X, but only 350 feet on Ka, making it essentially useless everywhere except New Jersey, get my drift?Originally Posted by ubernut
The only way to accurately test range (short of sending your detector to someone to have it professionally tested) is to go to a known source of a given band and use your odometer to see how far out your detector is picking it up. Using X band as a range test will give you a very false sense of security with even the cheapest detectors.
Thanks guys. I got a test today on Ka band. LEO coming in the opposite direction. In heavy traffic, I picked him up about 1 mile away. I think my RD just paid for itself.
