Default 8500 X50 daytime visual - Red vs. Blue

    Hi guys,

Just wanted to give you what i think on the X50 "red" display. I purchased it 1 month ago and noticed that the display with 3 brightness settings(min/med/max) was pretty weak. I'm a bright guy(lol) and noticed at night the red display on max was fine, blending in perfectly along with my 350Z red/orange interior display readouts. I've owned radar detectors for 20 years, and always with a red display.... sure as hell never blue!

The problem is this: max setting during the day was absolutely worthless - on a sunny day with the glare hitting the dashboard and the detector, the display gave a blind readout. You couldn't read it unless you put your face 6 inches in front of it. Call me anal, but that didn't cut the cabbage. After fidgeting with it for a week, i even realized at night, with the min. display readout, it was worthless... unless you had it on med(okay) or max(fine).

I returned it to Belscort two days later, and in the process walked into Best Buy out of curiousity. And there in the back... were both the red and blue X50's. It was a perfectly sunny day, so i asked the BB guy if i could purchase the X50 Blue at the counter, and take it out to see if there was a difference. He checked with the store manager, and he wouldn't allow me to do it... without coming in 5 min's later to return it and having to pay a 15% restocking fee. He told me that the manager said that the X50 Blue's display was 100% brighter than the red display. So i took the plunge and bought it.

That night i hooked it up, noticing how bright the blue display was. I thought it was on max setting, only to find out it was medium(default). I then, along with customizing my other settings, put the display on max. It was so damn bright, it dimly lit up my interior(seats) with the garage lights off!

The next day was sunny, clear skies here in Dallas. I had the display setting on max on the way to work, totally bright blue. I went out at lunch about 2pm when the sun was bearing down, and drove around only to witness how the blue display was perfectly bright and clear with the sun glare coming down on the dash and detector. The X50 Blue was the best choice i could have ever made on a detector. Beautiful bright blue readout when needed. And i sure as hell don't need it to match my interior readouts, total nonsense. That blue looks sweet as hell perched up there above that black dash, right along with the red/orange readouts down below.

And you wonder why the X50 Blue is $40 more than the X50 Red? It's the quality of the LED matrix readout, that's why. The red display is worthless in the sun .... unless you drive in the sun with your face 6 inches in front of it.

To all the future 8500 X50 owners out there, i do not recommend the X50 Red... unless you live in Seattle where it's always cloudy. My old Bel 985 had a brighter red display than the X50 Red...

On the other side of the coin, I live and drive in and around Phoenix, AZ--one of the brightest spots on earth, and I've never had any problem seeing the red display on even the brightest days--with sunglasses on. Without them, the display is very difficult to read on a bright day, even at the highest settings. If you don't want to shell out the extra $40, get a pair of drugstore sunglasses (though mine are prescription Ray-Bans) and look through them. I also have no problem viewing the display on the lowest setting at night through my regular glasses, so different results for different people, I suppose.

That said, if you can afford the blue, I'd go for it. The downside is that at night it's more obvious that you have a detector in your car--which makes you the car people will use as their rabbit if they notice, and if there are any cops behind you, they might play with their radar just to give you fits (has happened to me before).

    bcorby,

I've already determined that it's a risk with the X50 blue at night set to max. With tinted windows, side-approaching the car, it's so easily seen right through the tint. And from behind, it's a different story! What's so funny, it looks cool as hell.

With the display level set at medium at night, it's not easily detectable from the outside with tint. With the low setting, it's impossible to see. With no tint(from the rear), just set it to minimum, and you can't see it from the outside. Nothing to worry about in that regard, as far as LEO is concerned.

    Let's put it this way:

Sunny day with glare(sunglasses not required) - set it to max.
Normal(cloudy/overcast) - set it to min or med, both are good.
Night - set it to minimum or dark(you can see the "hd" very easily).

ps. with the red display at night, you can't see the "hd" unless your face is 6 inches in front of the RD.

That's the difference between Red and Blue(higher quality LED). The $40 extra is well worth it.

I wouldn't own a V1, with all the falsing(x/k) it'd drive me nuts. The detector unit itself reminds me of a 1976 Plymouth four-door... OUTDATED. Matter of fact, it'd look great on the dash of a Plymouth four-door.

The X50's performance meets/exceeds the same performance of the V1. Expert mode, that's all i need. I love seein' the different meters givin' readouts when you approach more than 1 frequency. Who needs to have arrows tellin' you where LEO is at? It does you no good whatsoever. Total child's play...

really? in which category does it exceed?

not like the 8500 has ever changed since it came out

I have owned both, the 8500 is definitely more convenient and pleasant to use but in performance the V1 is better

    Read your reviews, buddy.

For starters, falsing. V1 sucks in that department. X50 is best in class for the Ka range. I'll give K range to the V1.

Btw, we're not talking about the 8500. If you're tryin' to compare that to the X50, find another board. There's no comparison... my buddy owns the 8500, nothin' better than the Bel 985.

    V1 - POP2(k/ka) What a joke!

If anything the RX65 is better then the X50 in, it's KU mode lol.

ps. ugly detector, crappy display readout, no better in k/ka,
    subpar laser detection.
