This is just a report and an opinion about the 9500i (and maybe the 9500xi as the detection capability is not much different), as it has been 2 years since i got the 9500i and i just got my 2nd ticket in the mail: Speed Cam, 3 nice pics and even a video of me cruising down on Carnegie av. in Cleveland. They say i was driving 50m/h on 35. For those who drive on Carnegie in Cleveland, the RD beeps almost constantly down that avenue, some are falsie some aren't. I guess i just ignored them as they drive u insane. So that's my fault and i don't have the red light/speed cam database even though you can get Cleveland's 30 or so speed cams online.
Before I state my observations, just quickly, I got my 1st ticket driving 76 on 55 on a 2 lane little road. The cop was driving from the other direction coming downhill from a curve. I had half a second of warning when i got the ramp up (this was before the firmware update). Slammed the brake, but too late. So go figure...instant-on or who knows.
My observation are biased since i did not have another unit to compare and my basis is the number of saves, or me just cruising behind a cop picking up signals etc etc...
In general, this unit is a very good one. I am not sure how many times it did save me from tickets as sometimes i was not even speeding. Just for the record, I have been driving for quite some time and I get pulled over about once a year for speeding. The last 2 years my mileage skyrocketed so i am taking the 2 last tickets as a good sign as i should have had more.
Since I got the RD I learned:
-not to speed without a rabbit
-never speed in 2nd or 3rd lane if the view is not clear and if a rabbit isn't opening up for you.
-it is ok to speed on a clear view lane but get back to normal before the curve or when the road goes downhill as cops wait for you and the RD might not pick the signal.
-stay on the lookout
-it is more likely to get caught at night if you speed
-and finally, never rely on the RD totally as you can get trapped when getting too self confident.
So again, excellent unit, but not an unfallible devise, sometimes warning was relatively late where I see the cop, then the RD starts beepking, again go figure if it is instant on or what. On other occasions I see the cop shooting lazer and i am behind traffic and RD is getting nothing.
The most important thing for me is that the RD gives you some info that otherwise you do not have. It increases your situation awarness. For me, it is not a DIRECT help to beat cops but an indirect one. I am more cautious about speeding and less requless (maybe that's because of age too). I am more on the lookout even when i am not speeding, want to speed or speeding.
2 last things: speed cams people in cleveland are bastards, the mayor and the old one that installed it are bastards , and I think i am going for the 9500ix!
RD hardwired and sitting about 3/4 from the bottom middle of the windshield and just below the visor.
