I am running at 14.5 volts right now off a hardwire, which seems a bit high. I was running at 13.8 off the cigarette lighter.
I know it has a fuse so I cant fry the thing, but what is a good voltage for it to be running at?

The automotive power environment is a challenging one, but your 9500ci should be able to handle anything your car can throw at it, up to and including a "load dump" of > 100V.
I have a 9500i
14.5 is fine... just means you have a damn good alternator. I'd be worried if it were getting voltage less than 12.5.
Anyone know how many volts is too many volts?
Car alternators have regulators on them to control the voltage so that it does not exceed ~14.4 V. All car electronics are made to run off of 12-14 volts.
You tapped into a less resistant wire than your cigarette plug, hence the higher voltage.
If you are running > 16 V you have other things to worry about than your radar detector.
Off topic: I believe some race cars run on higher voltages such as 16 V.

Just saw your other thread... you're getting power directly from the alternator, that's why the voltage is so high (it's charging the battery). Read what I posted in your other thread for other options.
These are the voltages I got about a year ago.
The cigarette lighter adapter gave off 14.2v
The smartcable was 14.3v
