Default I changed position of 9500ix

    Good morning

I moved my 9500ix from its windshield just below the rearview mirror in the center position of the windshield to sitting it on the dash in the center position of the windshield. I did this because I found the high placement too distracting.

The only difference in alerts that I have found is that alarms seem to occur at a bit further distances from target with the detector in its higher position.

Am I imaging this difference? Is there actually a significant difference resulting from the detector’s placement from a high to low position?

There isn't much difference between high and low but you increase the detector's chance of alerting first over a low mount because it has a slightly farther line of sight. I like low mounts because you can the display well but choose to mount high because it is stealthier and the RD stays coolers out of direct sunlight (especially the V1).

Mounting higher allows the detector to 'see' the radar waves from a greater distance.

I just did the opposite. I ordered a Country Joy bracket and invisicord setup for my 9500ix. Looks very clean. In the previous position (bottom center of windshield, resting on the dashboard), I could not reach any of the detector buttons while driving--all i had available was the mute button on the power cord head.

My opinion on the ergonomics of having the RD just below the RVM will have to wait until i have driven for a while.

Change in vertical elevation might be 20 inches approximately, so i don't expect a big change in sensitivity, but you never know. The RD now has a clear line of sight through the rear window, whereas before it was occluded by the package shelf. And i now have a ready to go setup for a car rental.

I used to have my 9500ix mounted center over the RVM. Moved it to the center back of the dash (my dash slopes down towards the windshield and if I mount the RD too close to the windshield on the dash the windshield wipers would block it). I now have another RD mounted over the RVM that I use on the open highway.

It is reasonable that detection distances with a RD mounted lower would probably be less. When mounted high, the RD can "see" ahead better and further.

Since I use my 9500ix only in places with RLC, detection distance does not matter much. Picks up RLC and speed cameras the same as when mounted higher.
