Almost 50%!!! Of us Bel/escort owners have had problems with our units. How many of you would buy a ford or chevy if half had to go in to be repaired so soon?
Man that's poor quality.

That's a valid point. The fact that when they are working, they work very well helps compensate for that. I work as an engineer for a manufacturing company, so maybe I am biased (too forgiving) when manufacturing problems pop up! Sometimes things go wrong despite your best efforts.Originally Posted by davekr
Radar detectors are complex RF devices, and they are probably more prone to breakdown than other electronics. I would rather have a good RD that needs service once in awhile than a mediocre or poor RD that never needs service.
I also own a V1. Yes, it has been more reliable than all my Belscorts but I have had a very few minor problems with it. I have had a few burned out LEDs and X band died on me. I do believe the V1 is superior overall than the Belscort, but neither has been absolutely perfect.
BEL has come a long way since the 645/745 series, now those were trouble prone!!! Talk about false alarms!!! I think BEL has made progress. But I don't like the fact that their basic repair charge is up to $85. IMHO that is too high! VR is more generous in its service policy. They are much more likely than BEL to do out of warranty repairs N/C.

I am glad you bought that up about V1. I got a ticket because my escort crapped out on me and didn't know it. I love my V1 but didn't want to make this an argument. I just think belscort has very poor quaility control. Say what you want about v1. But....... 8)

Right on brother. I have a shelf full of broken Bels. LoCal3's out the yang yang. One of them I even invested the $85 and send back in. Lasted about a year, now it's back doing the LoCal3 again. It's a bottomless money pit with Bel. I'm driving another brand.
LOL, sorry to hear that Stuck. I dont' know what you think, but I think there qualilty has diminished in the last few years. Like Mike V says, every week they are coming out with new models........Originally Posted by stuckma
I maybe a little bias on this one, but yes, Bel did have a problem with their earlier RX65 units and the returns were killing me...
However they did identify what the problem was and corrected it
Returns have dropped off A LOT!
This month only 2 were returned to us for the problem and they were replaced with new units.
As far as so many units, gives the customer more choice. Not everyone wants (or can) spend $300 plus on a detector.
If you're in the market for a detector, check your options, your needs and purchase your unit from a company that is authorized to sell the product and that will stand behind the product..

The only reason that you would had spent the $85.00 is if the unit was out of warranty or if you puchased from an unathorized dealer..One of them I even invested the $85 and send back in.
If you had puchased the unit from an authorized dealer, you would had been covered for a year and you could had gotten the extended warranty for only $39.00 and had been covered for an additional 2 years.
If you purhased from an unauthorized dealer, you're screwed! There is a good chance that you purchased a re-manufactured unit that was not new. That is why Bel/Escort would had not covered the warranty.
We even have had reports that unauthorized dealers have been getting older units, getting new cases, and then replacing the guts and selling as new!

Spoiler: show
My 995 had the self-cal/service required issue, but it has not been real common from what I have read.Originally Posted by crazyVOLVOrob

That was the case, it was out of warranty. But after I shelled out the $85 and had it serviced, it only lasted a year before it did it again. What does that tell you about the quality? And then when I called Bel and told them about this, you think I got any sympathy from them? No. Their reply was send back in with another $85 and they would service it again. Keeping these Bel's up and running would have forced me into bankruptcy at that rate.
