Default New here, questions about my 8500 x50

    Hello,

I am new here and I really don't know much about radar detectors but I am starting to learn now. I have a Escort Passport 8500 x50 installed in my Jeep Commander. I have it installed as high up on the windshield as possible and I have it aimed as level as I could. I have a few questions now, and please bare with me because I am totally new at this.

    1. I just set it to see at what frequency the radars are shooting at. Does frequency have anything to do with anything? Could I be able to tell maybe what gun they are using if I knew the frequency?

    2. I don't have a laser jammer but I have NEVER, not even once had my detector alert me of a laser. I live in Orlando. Why exactly would I want a laser jammer as opposed to me radar detector just warning me of a laser?

    3. Is there anything else I should know, maybe some tips or something that someone totally new to this would need to know?

    Thank you =]

Your escort will tell you which band you are getting alerts on, it will even tell you the exact frequency if you want to know...In Florida the main threats are K and Ka., X band is not used. Most people turn X off to skip getting alerted to grocery store doors.
In general X is easist to detect, Ka the hardest. Some frequencies are specific to frequency like 33.8 GHz Ka used by MPH Industries, but in general you don't know the type of radar gun shooting at you.

If your RD is mounted high, chances are you were lasered and it didn't set off your RD. The laser beam is very narrow and cops don't aim for your windshield, usually the front grille or headlights So even if you RD never alerts you may have been clocked. Even if you do geta laser alert, 99.9% of the time its too late, your speed was recorded.

    Keep researching, hope this helped.

Frequency helps you identify Ka band frequencies. Different Ka band frequencies are harder to pick up than others. Here is a list of the frequencies from easiest to pick up to hardest:

    1. 34.7
    2. 33.8
    3. 35.5

You can tell what gun they are using with the frequency as well. 34.7 is Stalker radar, 33.8 is usually a MPH gun, and 35.5 is Kustom Signals. Here is the full list:

    the tools

A radar detector cannot provide adequate protection against police laser. You receive a laser alert when you are HIT with the police laser gun. By the time you get an alert, the officer will already have your speed. Laser jammers are the only reliable defense available against police laser.

Mount your 8500 high near your RVM. Another tip, beware of I/O and QT. Read up on the forum what those are.

X2 to both. The problem with laser detection on a RD is that less educated users get a false sense of security and think they are protected from it with their RD.

Thank you all for the posts, it has been of much help in understanding everything. I have one more question, how often are lasers used? Like how many officers have laser instead of a radar? And is it maybe specific to highway troopers or anything else like that?

    Thank you again =]

If you see a cop holding a gun up near his face and looking through a scope, it's laser. Also, laser cannot be used while they are moving.
