    Default Refurb 8500 K band?

Okay first off I just received my Refurb 8500. Ordered it Tuesday and got it today! Very fast shipping. It banged right up and works great. I decided to drive around to make sure it went off to the usual false alerts. Found some X and K band falses and worked great. Then about a good .5 of a mile down the road I could see some flashing lights, about a second after I started getting K band. Sure enough the cop had just pulled someone over and he was running K band. I even got a good quarter of a mile past the cop until I lost the signal.
But, is 1/2 mile good for K band on the 8500? He was not facing me so his radar was pointing away from me. Was it because he had just pulled someone over and maybe turned the radar off but it was still emitting signals? I'm not disappointed in the range at all, 10x better then my previous whistler xtr-140! Just wondering if that's the usual range it should be producing =)

    Thanks,
    Nick

There are many, many factors that go into what is good range and what is not. Traffic, weather, foilage, buildings, etc are all detection range huge factors.

This is not always a safe assumption. Fixed radar antennas can be mounted in the front or back windows, usually both, so he the LEO you encountered could have easily been running either rear or forward facing radar.

Absolutely not! Radar is either on or off. There is no residual or leaky radar. The LEO you encountered left it running.

You'll figure it all out with a little experience.

The 8500 is good on K band but not great.

Thanks for the feedback djram80! I guess you are right about alot of factors that take play. I thought it was pretty good detection compared to my xtr-140. So I'm extremely happy with my 8500!
    One last question!
Will the experienced meter on the 8500, the one that tells the band and the numerical value of the radar signal ( Ka 33.8), help me determine if its a false or a LEO? Will all cops in my town have the same value? Or will it differ patrol car to patrol car?

    Thanks again,
    Nick

Yes to the first question. No to the 2nd. In Charlotte, just look for 35.5 (UNCC, SHP) 34.7 (SHP and CMPD motorcycles), 24 (CMPD cruisers), and LIDAR. Turn X off. The 8500 has excellent range on K.

I wouldn't turn off X band according to this list:

Yeah I dont think I will right now, I dont get any X band falses and I took a road trip to Raleigh last month and saw some cops running X-band on the highway.

Yeah, it was on 49. I'll be graduating from there in December. Keep an eye out on campus, there aren't many places for them to hide... but where they are, they use them well.

X is safe to turn off in Charlotte. Leaving it on only results in turning your radar detector into a traffic signal detector.

Wow that's funny, small world I guess. I remember viewing this video a while ago on Youtube and was wondering if that was UNCC. But that's cool!

What are you studying there by chance? I'm going into the Computer Engineering program.

And yeah true, I think I might turn it off then. I also turned that new meter view on and its great so far! Have not done much driving since my car is in the shop till early next week. Cant wait to see some super long range and nice saves though! =)
