I bought a used escort 8500 off of an ebay user about 25 days ago..
I was able to hardwire the unit, into the fuse box, using a spade connector, into the acc ignition fuse, so that when the key is in the off position, the unit shuts off.
I'm in a 2010 equinox..
For the first 20 days or so, i never had an issue.. i ran it in auto mode or city mode (i still cant figure out a way to minimize the false alarms for things like grocery stores etc.. auto mode or city, i get tons of beeps near them, previous detectors werent quite that crazy in city mode either)..
So about 5 days ago, i suddenly started getting laser alarms, driving through suburbs and areas where i know i'm not being lasered, or even sitting still in my driveway..
I'm not sure what could have changed, other than i now have my iphone 3g mounted near my dashboard.. same usb cord etc..
I did read that someone suggested opening up the unit and taking a dry q tip and brushing things off then blowing the unit off, they claim to have not had false alarms since..
Other suggestions i've seen include a ground loop isolator? (not sure if that would apply in my direct wire case)..
Or returning it to escort to have it repaired for $60 (by then i might have just bought the refurb unit for that price)..
Any thoughts or tips on the laser false alarms or how to minimize grocery story type false alarms or at least have the thing automute in city mode after a beep or two (i'd rather not just turn the unit off in the city if i can avoid it, tend to move from one to the other alot)...
