Refurbed 8500 - how to make sure its working as expected?

I recently got a refurbished 8500, and I finally have it wired and set up and everything. Since this is my first RD I don't really know what to look for to check that it is working properly.

I would like to post pictures of my install in that forum area but I don't think I can yet with my post count. Right now I have it mounted using the visor clip on the driver side visor, and it is kind of inside a visor organizer also. To my eye, the RD is level.

So far the only setting I have changed is to put it from "auto" to "highway" mode. Driving a bit these past two days I get X-band hits and random stop lights, and K-band from the doors of target, etc.

There is also one K-band "your speed is" sign around the corner from me. It is at the bottom of a small hill (about 200 meters from the top) and I get a full K-band hit at the top of the hill (once I can see the sign), but until I can see the sign I can't seem to get a warning. Is this what one would expect?

My guess is that it is working fine, but since I have never used one of these before I'm trying to get my bearings. Anything else I should watch out for? Thanks.

hard to tell without testing, but you should easily get a warning before you can see the leo's, so if you only get them when they are in view I would say something is wrong. Also watch for alerts in weird places, where it should not alert.

pretty much sounds pretty much on par with the performance my old 8500.

can you find out from Escort when it was last serviced?

From what I understand, since I got it from the escort refurb store, that means it was serviced pretty recently. But I guess it could have still been on the shelf for a while....

I did find another speed sign nearby that I get a much better warning on, so I think a lot of it probably has to do with the intensity of the particular sign.
