Thumbs up Single suction cup mount might work after all

I needed to buy a new direct wire cable anyway, so I went ahead and got the new mount. With the deep cold we've been having, the small suction cups have been a real pain. At first I didn't think I was going to be able to use the new mount because it caused the RD to extend out past the RVM, which would cause blind spots. But then I tried it under the RVM, and it worked better. It's not as stealthy as the former mount, which was above and to the left of the RVM, but it still looks ok. And it's still pretty high up on the windshield. I've left the mount stuck to the windshield overnight in single digit temps and it holds fine.

Nice. Do you think the single suction cup mount could be used upside down? For mounting above RVM?

Only if you don't mind having the RD upside down. Otherwise the mount would be right in front of the RD.

I wouldn't mount the 8500 there. If you were to hit a bump in the road or speed bump, the 8500 will go slamming into your RVM. I'd mount it high behind your tint strip.

No, it won't. It's very tight against the RVM and I stuck a small rubber bumper on the top of the RD. And I used to have it up by the tint using the old mount, but with the new one, the RD is so far back from the windshield that the RVM is out in front of it, causing a blind spot.

I have had issues with the single cup mounts in cold weather holding. I have found running the defrost and warming up the windshield resolves the issue in freezing temps.

Here's the main issue I have with the single cup mount: I have the exact same style of suction cup for my GPS. The thing holds pretty well, but it cold weather it will sometimes pop off. That's no big deal for my GPS, it sits as low on the windshield as I can get it so just falls about an inch onto my dashboard.

My RD on the other hand is sitting all the way up near my RVM. It would fall about a foot and a half, which is unacceptable. With two suction cups, I've yet to have them both fail at the same time so it'll just dangle off one cup for a while until I can fix it. There's no way would I trust $300 worth of equipment to a single suction cup.

Agreed. Although I've had both small suction cups fail at the same time. But the power cord keeps the RD from failing. When I use the coiled cord in my roadster, I loop it over the RVM stalk so it will hold the RD if the mount fails.

Same here, but I don't trust the cord to hold it either.
