    Default 9500ci update error

Recently I purchased a new Alienware M11x laptop that is running Windows 7, since my old XP laptop died. On the first software update of the ci (with Detector Tools v.1.5) I got the following error message:

Upload exception: System.UnauthorizedAccessException: Acces to the path 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Escort\DetectorTools\CalData - 16005887.dat is denied.
    at System.IO._Error.WinIOError(Int32 errorCode,String maybeFullPatah)
at System.IO.FileStream.Init(String path, FileMode mode, FileAccess access, Int32 rights, Boolean useRights, FIleShare share, Int32 bufferSize, FileOptions options, SECURITY_ATTRIBUTES secAttrs, String msgPath, Boolean bFromProxy)
    at Detector_Tools.FileEncryption.Encrypt(Byte[]Data,String fileOut, String Password)
    at Detector_Tools.ToolsMainForm.SaveCalibratinData()
at Detector_Tools.ToolsMainForm.UpdateProcessors(Obje ct sender, DoWorkEventArgs e)
    at System.ComponentModel.BackgroundWorker.OnDoWork(Do WorkEventARgs e)
    at System.ComponentModel.BackgroundWorker.WorkerThrea dStart(Object argument)[/I][/I]

It had already made the four of the five passes before the error popped up. I ran the software twice with the same results. Is it possible that the software is not compatible with Windows 7?

After it failed to run I pulled up the file properties up and Windows 7 asked if I had successfully run the file in an earlier version (XP). I have. It offered to tailor Windows 7 to emulate the way it would have been installed under XP. I have not tried that yet because I don’t want to screw anything up. The 9500ci seems to still be functioning normally under the last update, but I can’t be sure. Any ideas?

Sending the unit back would be a last resort, as I spent nearly 20 hours installing it behind the bumper. I don’t relish the thought of pulling the whole front off the Porsche again! I’d appreciate some help here! Cheers!

That would be a major drag!

I'm not a computer expert, but it may be an issue of 64 bit OS vrs 32 bit. I have this cheap china USB to RS232 cable that hangs on Vista 64 (no 64 bit drivers for it).

Maybe the easy thing to do is borrow someones XP michine to get it done. You could ask Escort, but it would be faster to just use another XP machine. I will say this though...Updating my 9500ix on Vista 64 worked fine. Then again, Vista 64 is not Windows 7.

    Good luck!

Thanks Phil! Yeah, it's the 64 bit version. That may be it. Unfortunately I don't know anybody around me that has XP or VISTA on a laptop that I can borrow. And driving the Porsche to the third floor of the townhouse to use my XP desktop is a real pain!

Since Windows 7 offered to emulate XP to run the file I guess I could do that. It makes me a little nervous that it might ruin the current ci load. . . if it hasn't already!

Looking at the "security alerts", maybe you need to be logged in as the Admin??? Highest level of install??? Not just a user with so-called Admin Rights.

    Just thinking out loud here.

Try running Detector Tools as Administrator, or moving that file out from under Program Files (e.g. into your Documents folder). Ever since Vista, Windows has been somewhat picky about accessing files in the Program Files subtree, since this can indicate an attempted security breach.

If that doesn't work, you may need to find a machine running XP in order to perform your firmware update.

I installed it on XP, Vista and W7, works like a charm...
Most probably you should consider trying the 32bit instead of the 64bit version...

Thanks all. I think it's probably the 64 bit version of Windows 7 that's lousing everything up. Unfortunately (or fortunately) that's what I've got for an OS on the new laptop! We'll see what ESCORT says. Funny thing though, I had NO problem updating my wife's 9500ix from this Win 7 machine!

I'll try moving the downloads from system files to documents and logging in as ADMIN, though I thought I already did that. It will be worth looking at to make sure. Will let you know how I make out in the end.

If that doesn't do it, I'll have to try and find someone with a XP or VISTA machine that will let me upload Detector Tools on it and then download the update. I sure will hate to go through this each time. Good luck with that!

Thanks to all who responded. Good ideas, all of them! Good to know that there are others out there willing to try and help. I HATE trying to figure this stuff out all alone!

    Regards,

I think somebody already said this, but if you have W7 professional or ultimate you can download the XP virtual PC (for no charge) and run it on that.

Some electronics stores sell longer USB cables.
