    Default why does expert mode do this??

    I have been switching between spec and expert mode on my 8500 and i thought expert mode would alert to two separate K and Ka if there were two present..correct? well...i passed ONE trooper running Ka (rear horn/same lane) yesterday and it showed up as two bars on the display, and today i passed ONE SCDOT truck (opposite lanes) and it went off on K band and again showed 2 bars for a single alert. WHY????

    also why do SCDOT trucks have K-band?

    They are transmitting two radar sources. Either a front and rear radar or two front radars (one is for targeting vehicles, the other is for measuring cruiser speed when shooting radar while moving)

    Also, it isn't unusual for a very strong radar signal to show as two radar sources in Expert mode. This only happens when you are right on top of the radar source.

    The difference between spec mode and threat mode is this; spec mode shows the frequency of the alert. X band 10.xxx, K band 24.xxx, Ka band between 33 and 36 GHz. All radar frequencies listed are in Gigahertz.

    Threat mode is a multiple signal display, example X|| K| Ka ||. It looks just as presented. Up to 4 X band, 2 K band and 2 Ka band can be displayed at the same time. The length of the vertical bar next to letter will vary in length giving you a indication of relative signal strength.

    The threat display mode maxed out on signals looks like this:

    X|||| K|| Ka||.

    I hope this helps. Personally I like Spec mode, that way I know the frequency of each encounter. But the Threat mode can be very useful if more than signal is present, some times LEOs will run multiple speed traps in close proximity to each. The second speed trap may catch some one the first one missed or will catch some when they think no more speed traps exist. Threat mode is similar to the Bogey counter on the V1.

    Ghosting.

    If the signal is strong enough, it can overload the receiver circuitry and "bleed" over onto adjacent frequencies (or, rather, it appears that way to the radio receiver). It should only show two bogey bars if you're relatively close, though - if you're farther away, then it should still show only one. If it's still showing two you might have a different issue.

    well with both encounters the vehicles were sitting still. the LEO was using rear radar only. it did go to 2 bars when i got close to him. but at the same token..i encountered a K-band city cop and when i got close to it it didn't go to 2 bars.

    seems kinda pointless if it works the way you guys explained it.

    Went back and reread the post and I missed the boat on that one. I think ghosting as mentioned above is what happened.

    When a detector shows more radar sources than really exist, uually when one is right on top of the radar source. This is quite common.
