Unfortunately I don't have a portable video camera. My cell phone is capable of taking seriously horrible quality video, but I believe it can only hold a few seconds worth. I'll have to look into getting or borrowing one, though.

I was in the same boat as you were frustrated with my ix, just give it some time and you will start to understand it.
I always wanted to be alerted miles away and some times it wouldn't work like that, but once you get a true save then you will start liking your ix.
Keep in mind weather conditions, structures, and the LEO Radar if he is using K or Ka band C/O, I/O, Q/T, etc...
It will take a couple of shots to get the ball in the hoop so just be patient.
I also would recommend as counter measure device a CB, $100 investment will save you miles ahead than what an RD can do, just sharing some free advice with you.
The 9500ix is a pretty simple unit. Though it can have great range there is noting carved in stone that a .3mi alert isn't good, I have had many my self.
If the 9500ix alerts you before you see the LEO its doing its job, but allso keep in mind LEO's also use I/O speed traps so at times there may be no inital warning.
Unkind, how fast were you going, and was the 9500ix in "Auto" or "AutoNoX" mode? In either of the Auto modes the 9500ix uses speed adjusted sensitivity to reduce X and K band radar detection range the slower you travel. At about 50MPH it is at full detection range.
In "Highway" mode the 9500ix is always at full sensitivity, maximum detection range.
For those encounters I was in Highway mode doing 40MPH.
Today I got another save...or scare...however you want to call it. I was doing 75MPH in a 55 zone on US84 on my way home from work, the road is fairly level line of sight wise. Traffic was moderate and I had a couple of vehicles in front of me in the fast lane doing about 60MPH. All of a sudden I get a BLARING K band alert and a "Multiple Signals Detected" voice (I guess the signal was so strong it detected him as 2, or he was running front/rear). I slam the brakes and quickly slow to the PSL. About .3 - .4 mile away is a LEO in oncoming traffic who I assume was running moving I/O K band. I guess he hit the guy in front of me who was only doing +5PSL because he didn't flip a U turn and get me. In any case, I'm getting a feeling I'm about due to lose at this game.
So about 1/2 mile max with moving radar?
Everyone looses "this game" with I/O. No super detector would help that. It is what it is. Only if the LEO advertises with multiple close bursts will you know he is ahead. If they don't advertise, you could get owned easy.
