Thread: Where to mount?

    Default Where to mount?

I've read many of articles from Radar Roy's site, but I still think I am doing something wrong. Initially, I purchased a Vector V995, ran a hardwire mount w/ the escort kit, and used a visor clip on my 2004 Acura TL. From what I can see, it does not have interfering tint that would affect the radar detector.

I have passed multiple police officers without the detector ever whimpering a beep. I then further tested the detector by passing known radar detector speed displays and it always seemed to go off right as I was a few feet away; even then I was spectacle of a nearby CVS triggering it.

I thought I had a defective V995, so I returned it; rather than try the same that was not detecting, I purchased a 8500 x50. Unfortunately, I still pass officers with their radar in hand, without a warning; same goes for the radar detector speed awareness machines.

I like the incognito look and was hoping not to have to mount the 8500 with the standard suction cups. I did mount it with them directly behind my rearview mirror, but had the same results.

The only thing I have not tried is a visor mount right above my instrument cluster, which would be perfect since it directs the radar above the windshield wipers. Any advice for a newb?

The LEO with a gun in his hand is almost assuredly running laser, not radar. You sir, need to read this:

Thanks, DJRams. Do you agree that radar detection is at its best mounted higher or lower? Also, are the speed traps that display your speed laser or radar?

speed displays are radar. Mount that detector high; above the rearview mirror if possible. You could also mount it anywhere by the rear view mirror you feel comfortable with.

Mount it high and mount it so that the right side of the X50 can rest on the upper left corner of the rearview mirror. Took me a long time to figure out how to mount the X50 level (steep windshield) and keep it from bouncing in the TL last weekend as the V1 is out on loan. High mount will maximize radar reception but minimize laser reception, but laser reception is only a way of telling you you're busted.

I have it rmounted on the visor clip and it is not picking up radar from the speed detectors. I can try mounting the right side of the radar to the left of the rear view, but won't it be more visible to a casual passerby?

As others have said, mount it high, above the RVM if possible. Detecting laser just tells you a ticket is coming so mounting low is worthless. Maybe your hardwire is wrong if you are not getting any alerts. Go to a store that uses radar for doors to see if it is working. Maybe posting pictures so we can see what is wrong.

Sounds to me like you have a metallic coated windshield. Go to a speed sign, pull over in front of it if you can (you can be pretty far away from it) and hold the powered on detector out your windhsield or sunroof if available. If it goes crazy then you have one of these windshields.

If you do then your options are slim. Some have small areas with no coating to use detectors. This area is probably near the rear view mirror. Another solution is a remote mounted detector like the Qi45 or 9500ci. The detector module is mounted into the front of your car, the windshield will not effect their performance.
