Using phone cable adequate to make power cables?

I noticed that the Escort OEM power cords have more copper in them (lower gauge). Are regular phone cables adequate in supplying power? I am making my own Stealthcord/Invisicord for my Redline. Length will be 12".

I see that Valentine tells you it is ok to make your own. I was just wondering if the thinner copper wire will supply enough juice to the Redline? I read in another thread in here that someone used a long phone extension and the Redline gave him a voltage drop warning. The thread never did mention if it was a voltage drop elsewhere or usage of the long phone cable.

Are the Ebay power cables the same as Escort or are they plain phone wiring? I suppose I could buy the Escort hardwire kit and use the remaing cable to make the DIY Stealthcord/Invisicord.

I have my 9500ix mounted on my rear view mirror. I didn't want to buy another kit, nor did I want to run the wire far, so I just took a black phone cord cut it, and hooked it up to the + and - of the overhead driver's side light, and no problems.

I also used a standard phone jack to a 12v adapter in the house when I need to do updates, no problems whatsoever. In fact the 12v adapter is only 500mA, I doubt the gauge wire is going to cause any problems.

Whenever possible, I use in-wall phone (round jacket, 24AWG) wire instead of the phone-wall jack wire (26AWG). The round jacket wire can pose a challenge for crimping on plugs if using a crappy crimper.

I've tried different lengths of 26 gauge wire, up to 12' or 14' was okay; when using a 25' the voltage drop was too substantial.

Got lucky and found another black phone cord that has thicker wiring. Wire thickness is between a regular phone cord and the Escort power cord wiring. Thicker wire is not flimsy at all and easier to solder. I made a Stealth/Inviscord and a straight plug-in cord for my 2 cars. For the straight plug-in cord, I recycled an old cell phone charger, cut the old wire up, and wired the phone cord into the charger. Total cost: $2.29 for pins from a Radio Shack D-Sub connector (P/N 276-1427) to make the stealth/invisicord. I already had the shrink tube and phone cord.

Green wire= ground -
Red wire = positive +

It didn't but does now; you can barely see it in the picture since it is tucked under the cord. It had a connector for a Motorola cell phone. I cut the wire from the PCB inside the cigratte lighter case, slid the phone cord through strain relief and soldered the phone cord wires into the PCB. Works like a charm and looks like I bought it that way.

One small thing, esp with the stealth cord method, there is no inline fuse protection unless you add one.
