Default Escort 8500 X50 vs Solo S2 Florida Trip Test!!!

I am going to Kissimmie,FL around February 10. I am going to purchase a solo S2 for the 30 day test period to see how it stands up against the X50. I am taking a big 2005 Ford F350 truck....since it is wide I am going to put one on one side of the windshield and one on the other. There will be about a 4 foot space between them. Just thought I would let everyone know. I thought about getting a STI but it's not worth $475 to me. It's not illegal here so I don't care. Range is not much better if any than the X50 (at least thats what ESCORT says

Will you be running the Solo S2 on battery power only?

Hey Radar Kid, I'm in the Kissimmee/St. Cloud area and the LEOs here will hide off axis and use instant on, run in packs, and even "shoot down" from bucket trucks disguised as traffic signal repair crews in the median. They had a great "sting" here last year where they had an officer dressed as a homeless guy holding a "Slow down Police speed trap " cardboard sign in the median of a major intersection radioing descriptions of cars to target and they were writing up to 75 speeding and red light running tickets an hour! The LEOs got some flack from Homeless advocates saying that they were giving Homeless people a bad name. They are even using laser to ticket speeders driving their kids to school. I have been VASCARed in the past, so I definately use my CB when I drive on I-4 and the FL Turnpike for FHP. Have fun down here, but be careful.

If you could, try to run battery only with the most conservative options dialed in. As far as I know, only the Whistler 1788 doesn't "sleep" aka have a duty cycle.

I thought the SOLO had the same performance whether you use batteries or cord. Only difference is the display stays lit with the cord.

But before we begin the nuts-and-bolts session, let us mention that cordless operation exacts some compromises. That's because everything revolves around battery life. While it's possible to design a battery-powered detector with every bit of the performance and features of a corded model, it would suck down a set of Double-A alkalines in roughly the time it takes you to back from your garage into the street. This forces designers to walk a tightrope, balancing battery longevity with sensitivity.

To do this, every cordless has a duty cycle; it's shut down a certain percentage of the time to conserve the batteries. We're talking milliseconds here and you won't notice the duty cycle in operation but there's definitely a reduction in sensitivity, especially on Ka band. That's because the extraordinarily wide band, 2600 Megahertz wide to be exact, some 52 times broader than X band, takes detectors a considerable amount of time to scan, looking for a signal that could be anywhere in there. The duty cycle only hinders this process. Net result: lower sensitivity and less advance warning.

So keep in mind that no cordless will approach the performance of the best corded models and maybe never will, barring a breakthrough in battery technology. But freedom from the hassle of power cords, not to mention the decline in conveniently-located 12-volt outlets in many vehicles today, continues to attract a loyal following for cordless detectors. The best analogy we've heard is courtesy of BEL-Tronics exec Don Rich: "It's no different than comparing a laptop to a desktop PC," he told us. "If you want go-anywhere, cordless convenience, you give up a little in performance. It's a tradeoff many are willing to make, particularly if they travel frequently and need the ultimate in portability."

Any thoughts?? I just wish I knew the length of the sleep cycle.
