Default 7500S internals vs. Solo S2--Horn and Motorola DSP

I investigated the 7500S and confirmed it was based on newer technology. Careful scrutiny of the FCC database showed that it was indeed different from the 7500. Its FCC ID is QKL7M2 and it has a new PCB, horn and a Motorola DSP. I suspect it is more of a twin of the Solo S2 than anything else. The horn is much lighter than 8500 and BEL RDs, which is the result of its smaller size and the use of a PCB metal layer forming its base.

This may make this a good deal as they sell for much the same price as the original 7500s. It may also explain the degraded X-Band performance as well. Its laser range to the rear is better than an BEL 960. Original 7500 models had the older "spring-clip" horn assembly and another DSP. The 5000 Passport had a TI TMS3200 series DSP, which I believe is second-sourced by a number of FABs, and likely is found in the original 7500.

    Solo S2 guts for reference:

Note that the horn is most likely the same. It is covered by a daughterboard in the SoloS2.

After confirming that the X-Band on this unit is indeed inferior to a Passport 5000 (and all other RDs in my stable just like an X50) I just noticed that the 7500S is "MADE IN CANADA".

Also, it has defeatable VG2 and the SAS warning (Cobra, anyone) has been deleted. According to the manual(s) VG2 was absent from the original 7500 and it has defeatable SAS warnings. Based on this, I'll conclude the following:
    1. It's no longer an Escort build (the 7500) that may have been intended as a Cobra OEM.
    2. It may share some technology with BELs that have VG2 detection/LO shut-down, although I thought Whistler's (and others) have this feature.

Does BEL make a series of RDs with small horn assemblies?

Your findings may explain the substandard performance I have heard it has......what do you think of it's performance?

Thank, Jim. I saw that on the FCC database.
Dave, I'm not sure it's substandard except in the context of a BEL 940 being a 985 stripped of features. It does not false-alarm at all and the laser sensitivity seems excellent. I'll know more with time.

This unit may prove good for those annoyed by door-openers

Any thing missing there? Seems to have a lot of "air" space or is it just my eyes?

That's where the battery compartment/batteries go.
