Hardwiring X50 with Phone Cord

I am planning on hardwiring my X50, but I don't want to order a hardwiring kit if I don't have to. I plan on using a regular phone cord to do this. I read in a previous post that the green wire is suppose to be connected to a 12V lead and that the red wire is suppose to be connected to a ground lead. Can anyone confirm this for me? And are the other wires to be isolated by themselves? Thanks in advance...

I would also like to know if anyone has done any testing on the otehr two wires. Logically it seems that one wire would be used to signal an alert to so the SmartCord can flash the corresponding LED, and the other wire would be used for the SmartCord to tell the detector to mute the alert. I may end up borrowing a multimeter in order to test this. The plan is to have a hardwired X50 with power and mute buttons under the dash near my fuse box.

Just buy a hardwire kit seen em' on ebay for under $20.00 besides you won't have a fuse on a reg. 4 wire phone cord!

I would rather buy from Escort than from EBay. Anyway, I plan to make my own cord, and any information(or direction to it) would be helpful.

Well it's just a powercord, doesn't matter if it's from ebay or escort & if you get a power serge while using reg. 4 wire phone line your gonna fry your detector (no fuse)!!

You do not need the kit. I just performed this install on my 528i the other day. I bought a short section of RJ-11 (telephone cord) from radioshack for a few dollars and wired that bad boy up. Works perfectly. The line I tapped is a switched line and is fused already. I am almost certain that you have the wires correctly assigned but I will try to confirm that later tonight for you. I did not hook up the other two wires as they are for the LED alert and mute I believe. If you reverse the polarity it is not a big deal as the RD will not turn on and if that is the case simply reverse the wires. A cheap multimeter helps avoid that potential waste of time. I will try to take a pic for you if you like.

If you look at the original cord that shipped with the detector, green is ground and red is +12. The order of the wires will be flipped on one end of a phone cord, so just go by the position of the wire in comparison to the original cord. I wired mine up with phone cord, and while it is a lot smarter to use a fuseholder, I didn't. I expect that if it were ever to short, the 15A fuse that it is connected to will blow within a couple minutes of the headliner catching fire.

but if you did the hardwire with a phone cord, would you be able to keep the smartcord mute box thingy?? I'm hardwired with a kit I got from Car Toys... I HATE paying for shipping no matter where I'm shopping (Unless from international sources obviously)
