I was a frequent visitor/reader in this forum in 2004-2005 when I wanted to buy my first radar detector. At that time, the V1 seems to have a lot of better reviews than the 8500x50, so I went with it. It saved me a couple times on the highway, but in the city...MAN, this thing would just never want to STFU. I ended up keep having to turn the volume down to the lowest, which then killed the whole purpose of having a radar detector. But that was not it, the problem with false laser alert also drove me crazy. I tried to deny its flaw by reasoning that may be it's because I drive an infiniti, which people report that it may cause the V1 to false on laser. But with so many problem summing up, I freed myself by posting it on ebay. Thanks god, at least this thing held its value. I was able to resell it at $370 after a couple months of use.
Now that escort has designed a better detector with less false and more features, I decided to give RD another try since this thing was on sale to $375 last week. Man, all I can say is AWESOME!!!! I don't hear it beep at all while driving through the heavy city traffic with lots of stores around. However, this thing DOES alert me like 1/2 mile ahead before I see the cop, which is good enough in auto-mode for city driving. Another feature that I really appreciate is that it alerts me the SPEED TRAPS that are very accurate in my area. At least twice a week I always see a cop pulling somebody over at that spot. Thanks Escort for coming out with this awesome product!!!
One worry that I have though. Since the V1 arrow patent has been expired since February 2011, I wonder if Escort gonna come up with something nicer than the 9500ix. That would really a deal breaker for me, since I don't want to buy two detectors in one year just because I always want the latest and greatest
