    Default Escort false LASER alerts

I'm sure many of you have experienced false laser alerts when accelerating hard, honking the horn, or sometimes even turning on your windshield wipers.

The folks at Escort have known about this problem for some time, and if you complain, you can return your detector to them and they will modify it and put some shielding in it to correct the problem. If you have this done before the warranty runs out, they will do it for free, but if you let the warranty expire you'll have to pay $60 for them to do it.

Its something they really should be doing to every detector they sell before it leaves the factory. Why you should have to return it to get a factory defect that they already know about fixed is beyond me. They apparently are not putting a good enough filter on the incoming power line to filter out the EMI from the ignition and other sources that ride in on the DC. Valentine suffers a similar problem, and their simple fix was to add a capacitor across the power leads to shunt the EMI to ground.

If I ever buy another Escort, I'll return it as soon as it arrives and make them modify it so it doesn't false on LASER ever time I step on the gas. Maybe sooner or later they will get the message and fix this problem instead of forcing the consumer to complain and return it.

If your detector falses on LASER frequently, I'd highly suggest you return it for rework. I had mine done and now it works much better. I should have done it sooner.

Most units don't do this out of the box, until they've aged some (I'm guessing some component is prone to failing that is part of the filtering). When I had an S7 X50 it never did this, but my friend had an 8500 that did, until he sent it in for repair (for other issues) and it came back not falsing to laser anymore.

I have three brand new 9500ix units. All three of them give me false alerts under heavy acceleration or if I honk the horn, right out of the box brand new. They all do it, it just depends on how much noise (EMI) the vehicle they are mounted in puts onto the electrical system from ignition, horn, etc. Motorcycles are even more prone to it, as are high performance cars.

I've had long discussions with the techs at Escort about this and they are well aware of the issue. They basically just play the odds and hope that your car doesn't put out enough EMI to make the LASER false alert instead of putting the proper filtering in place that would fix it for all vehicles. But since that costs money, they only add it if you complain.

I've had my 9500ix for 3 years and haven't had any problems like that at all.

Have you tried to replicate the problem in different vehicles? Some are known on this forum to cause it.

I've never had a Belscort laser false for anything other than the taillights of certain cars ale even then, that was only with the 8500. The V1 on the other hand....

What brands/models of cars are you driving that have these issues? If nothing else, we could have a stick thread of cars that cause this, just like there is a stick of windscreens that cause performance issues.
The only time I had problems with my 9500ix laser falsing was near airports, and then it went absolutely nuts.

I know this happens quite often with 9500ci cars. I guess it's an issue with the wires? Supposedly escort recently changed all the wires to be shielded but it's still a no go in some cars when the horn beeps. I don't use the horn enough for this to bother me.

I've personally never seen (with a ci at least) a laser alert go off under acceleration. I've driven some high HP cars with the 9500ci installed as well.

I only had one laser false on my Redline. Unfortunately it was while entering a construction zone and scared the daylights out of me. Shortly after that it started missing Ka alerts. I sent it in for service and now both problems appear to be fixed.
