Default 9500ix weird serial number/ registration issue

So my friend bought a 9500ix from someone he knows locally. He barely used it, and told my friend that it was never registered. It came with everything original, all of the books, and the card with the serial number and the key code. The serial number on the card matched the radar detector's serial number. I think he got it on amazon initially.

This is where it gets funny - he tried to register the Escort, to get updates. Oddly enough, it would tell him that the serial number was already registered - and he knew that it had never been registered by the only other owner.

So he plugged in the 9500ix to the 1.8 detector tools, and in the top part where it shows you the serial number, it showed him a different number than the one on the radar detector or on the card. In fact, this number is available to register and is not taken.

What is going on here? Obviously the detector tools is picking up a different, and perhaps correct, serial number internally from the 9500ix when connected.

Is it possible that the serial number on the card and the back of the 9500ix were switched, or perhaps incorrect?

    This is strange indeed!

Mind posting a pic of the label with the serial number? You can cover up the numbers if you like but we can help identify if the label is legit.

Was it originally purchased direct from Amazon or through a 3rd party seller? I don't know if Amazon is an authorized dealer or not, but if it was a 3rd party vendor it probably wasn't. Maybe the serial # got altered at one point (maybe to cover up a stolen and resold unit). Contact EscortRadar about it, he can get to the bottom of this.

I'm sure Amazon itself is, but not the 3rd party sellers. I have an interesting story on purchasing from Amazon. I recently bought a high-end camera on Amazon. I NEVER buy there from 3rd party sellers. So I put it in my cart---sold by Amazon. The next day I get a shipping email. Guess what? Shows it being sold by a 3rd party. I got the camera, but I am not a happy camper. I purposely bought from AMAZON, not someone I never heard of. Lesson learned...

It sounds like the serial number was switched. Return it to Amazon for a replacement or a refund. It probably wasn't an original purchase (ie you aren't the first owner)

I have personally seen resellers on Amazon sell our "new" products in used condition.

Buyer beware, if the POP has an Escort unauthorized reseller on it then we will not cover it under warranty (the link to the list is on the bottom of our home page). The good news is that Amazon will probably accept returns on these under their very gracious A-Z guarantee.

I've seen that happen too bigalinwv and the reverse (bought from 3rd party, fulfilled by Amazon). I think that their fulfillment system is broken.

I agree. I would have never bought it on Amazon form a 3rd party. I always check and recheck when I buy on there. It was switched AFTER I made the purchase.
