    Default 9500i vs heat?

its been 100+ degrees around here lately and i hardly ever take my 9500i off the windshield so it gets very hot when its in the sunlight.

i took it off the windshield to bring it inside and cool down today.
as soon as i grabbed it i couldnt believe how hot it was i couldnt even hold it without it burning my hands! it was like playing hot potato lol but i think it HAS got this hot before i just dont seem to care... it till works great and im just wondering how hot it can get and withstand before it will take a S***

anyone else get their detctors really hot too?

I have the 9500ix, and live in a climate that is in excess of a 100 much of the summer. I never leave in the windshield while parked for security reasons, but I would assume that Escort makes the detectors with heat in mind as you will be putting this thing in your windshield, and temps in the south can get crazy in the summer months. But when I do take it down, yes it is very hot.

I've lived in the South (Florida, Georgia, Texas, & North Carolina) and Southwest (Arizona) and had Escort Detectors most of that time. I've never had an issue with an Escort Detector being damaged or affected by the heat.

I just leave them up on the windshield or (currently) it's just up on the Blendmount hanging from the rear-view mirror.

Now, during that time I have tried to park in shade, use the sun-screens for the front windshield, etc. but I didn't, as a practice, remove the detector from the windshield.

The only downside I'd see in a place like AZ is that you'll probably go through suction cups as the heat beats on them pretty well (I remember going through a set a year out there).

The detectors, though, seem to be really well built.

These detectors can function at up to 158 F.......after that you have thermal runaway on some of the components and the detector locks up. Exceed 158 F and you also risk possible permanent damage to the detector.

But why leave your $300 - $500 detector on the windshield to cook? Repeated bake cycles will surely shorten the life of the components inside the detector and more than likely take the edge off it's performance over time. One of the biggest issues for designers is keeping the detector in tune with elevated temperatures, so the hotter you run it the tougher it is for the detector to maintain it's tune. You may not notice it until you get stopped because your detector started clipping off some portion of the Ka band or you lose a band entirely.

I always suggest putting it under the seat or inside the center console during the hot summer days.

believe it or not, i just sold my 9500i today for a valentine one. hated to see it go for 235$!! but hey i look dumb having two detectors sitting on my windshield LOL. it seemed to work well still and i had no problems. i always took it off the windshield and put it under the seat so it would not be in direct sunlight however it still got pretty hot in the car! when all said and done im happy with my valentine for 150$ 3.872 miss the gps though!!!!!

    Good info.

I placed mine on the upper windshield and when not using it I place it under the seat and so far so good in fact I told this lady to do as I do plus having it always on the windshield attacks thieves.
