Did you try to get the detector back? My understanding is the cop takes the unit as evidence to be used in court. They are not entitled to confiscate anything. For the price of the STi might be worth going to your court of conviction and demanding it be returned.

That is USA. Not sure for Washington DC but in VA, they only take it to record the serial number. In Ontario, they keep it as evidence then crush it. It says right on the legislation that the detector is now the crown's.
