Ok, many of you know I just bought my Max, and this last week I got my Live cord, and I haven't had any great encounters. I have decided to not keep it if I cant justify it's high price tag. Well this weekends 300 miles of driving through my city of San Antonio, Tx has made me make up my mind on whether or not I am keeping my max. I drove with my wife and kids most of this 300 miles.
Yesterday, on a long highway stretch Max sniffed out a K source so ridiculously far away that I thought it had V1 hardware inside of it. I was IMPRESSED! The live alert system asked if I wanted to report, and I reported accordingly.
I had some off axis KA sources that were 2+ mile distance detections off axis that were not saves, but today ... well today Max did something that has entirely factored my decision on keeping it or not.
Doing 80 in a 60 max warned me "Over Speed" I have my phone auxiliary connected via attenuation cable from the headphones jack on my phone to my cars sterio system. This way I can jam out to music on Pandora as loud as I so desire, and still get warnings. With my Samsung Galaxy S4 this was the case. I was 20+spl cruising the highway stretch of Hwy 16 south going towards Poteet Tx from San Antonio. Metallica "Black" Album jamming away loud as could be.
"KA" Band goes over my stereo system, and I hit the brake in panic because I was doing 80 in a 60 in State Trooper territory with their lightening fast 34.7 KA stalker radar guns. I got the alert, my wife looked at me with owl eyes because Max is usually super quiet. I get over in the right lane, and I think I'm nailed. ... my doubts and fears of this new radar detector filled me with the prediction and preparation to get my yellow slip of paper and a dirty look by an State Trooper as I had my family with me. Well folks this was not the case... Max sniffed that KA band around a big azz curve, and over a hill... I was doing speed limit wondering where the hell this copper was. Well finally that black and white crested over the hill he was really hauling some azzz too blowing past cars doing speed limit. This means Max sniffed that copper out the way I remember all my Valentine 1 radar detectors had done.
It auto reported the encounter (Many of you SA locals ...all those south san Antonio reports are via my detector ). My wife owned a v1 because I bought her one. She seen that save and was like WOW ..... NICE !!!!
So I'm absolutely 100% keeping my max.
There can be some obvious improvements to LIVE, but honestly I think escort would make far more RD sales if they just threw in the live cord with their RD's, and capitalized on the yearly service charges after the free 1 year. We need more folks using live and then LIVE has a value increase.
I also would like to see a feature where if I get a KA hit, off axis as this trooper experience and he's on the move in the other lane.... I should be able to hit the "report" button once, or twice, and by doing two hits ... it reports the KA as moving. So make a KA icon, with an arrow on it to signal this was a moving KA source. It may do the other LIVE user little good to think it was a stationary system when I could provide this was a moving encounter which gives more information. You could also then have the system keep the moving live encounter to just 15 minutes maximum since it would just cluster the database keeping none threatening locations uploaded to the server database.
The over speed warning should state it once, and then sleep\or have a grace period to not report over speed for a duration of 3 minutes or so, or unless a speed zone has changed and you over the speed limit.
All together I am impressed with max. I'm about to post this post on another radar detector forum where I was an avid V1 fan boy for quite some time. My Max is in my opinion the best detector experience that I have ever had. It provides me informational awareness that V1's arrows just cant do! However if there is not enough LIVE users... then V1 can still chuckle and laugh it up that their arrows still provide a great deal of useful information. Make a lower end detector that doesn't cost more tan 150$. Throw the Live cord in for 20$ upon new purchase of this 150$ detector, and have the detector focus it's sensitivity on the KA spectrum where it counts most. So it doesn't have to be the best ranged detector in the world, but it increases the LIVE users count, and more users reporting sightings will make LIVE prosper, and make those V1 arrows obsolete.
