Greetings from the same neck of the woods as icantdrive55,
It's been a long time but the gadget bug has hit again, this time it's detectors. To tell you how long, the last one was a Uniden. I've been lurking here the past couple weeks, reading, reading, watching vids, reading......While my financial situation is much better I definitely want value for my dollar.
There are zero red light cams anywhere near me (Grand Rapids would be the closest at 3hrs away) so for everyday driving that feature is not really a selling point for me though it is on the 9500ix and Bel GX65 that I have my eye on, of course the old warhorse Val 1 is there too minus the GPS stuff.
When it comes to the lockout ability, the GX65 would rule for me as I want total control of what I lockout not some computer program deciding for me.
While those are great detectors I also like pulling for an underdog like Whistler (the 695SE with it's better Ka could be interesting).
And when will Mike Valentine join the computer age and add a mini USB to his detector and design it so the firmware can be updated like my Garmin and now the 9500ix and GX65 instead of having to box it up and ship it back, just wondering.
Laser jammers, WOW they're crazy expensive. The thing is the mfg's know that no matter how good the detectors are at picking up laser (Val 1) if you don't jam you're stuck with a ticket notifier.
Luckily only one PD in a tri-County area I spend 90% of my time has laser but for those trips to the in-laws in NY I'm sure it would come in handy.
The unfortunate thing is that NO ONE near me sells the good stuff, heck you're lucky to even find a lower end Whistler, it's ALL Cobra crap which means having to mail order something and then deal with shipping it back vs. driving to the local store if it doesn't pan out.
Anyways, lots of great techincal input and I'll continue to absorb it b4 making a purchase decision.
