Just stumbled upon this site trying to get some honest information about the various radar/laser detectors out there. Far too often I've found stuff that looks like it was written by employees of a manufacturer or something like that.
I've never used one of these devices before, but I have what I consider a good technical understanding of how police radar and lidar work - so the only missing piece of the puzzle is getting a detector for my personal vehicle.
I had been managing fine without one until two weeks ago when I was stopped in Northern Virginia and accused of doing 92 in a 55, I now have to go to court for reckless driving and could face jail time and major setbacks in my career if the judge isn't sympathetic to my situation (US Army). The trooper got me with stationary radar.
In my life I've been stopped for speeding seven times. Twice they clocked me with speed strips (I imagine there's no preventative measure for this other than alertness), twice with radar and once with lidar. Twice I was let off with a warning, so I don't know what got me there. Frankly, one speeding ticket is too many for my budget, though - not to mention legal fees if I have to go to court for a BS reckless driving charge in VA for speeding.
I do most of my driving in suburban PA, the NJ turnpike/GSP and suburban NY. I do also visit VA from time to time, though.
The device that has me most impressed is the Cobra XRS-9960G, I am really intrigued by the high level of detection it claims as well as the GPS feature helping give early warning for known speed traps and red light cams. They also look the nicest by far - but that's neither here nor there. I've noticed a lot of people here dislike Cobra though, why is this? Is it just due to false positives? I've heard very good things about the Valentine V1 and the Bel STI (someone specifically mentioned the Bel was good for VA - but didn't say why). Also why are those two so much more expensive?
Also I really dislike mounting devices to my windshield. Are there any friction mounts available for radar detectors, so I can just leave it sitting on my dash while I'm driving?
Any advice anyone could give me would be greatly appreciated.
