Default Sited In San Diego By Sheriff Laser

    Hi All,

New member here! Yeah, Sheriff got me. Have read that even the new laser guns are problematic as to their accuracy. There are even some "circumstances" in my case that could work in my favor.

A great read on how to win with your case is Dan Brown's book, "Fight Your Ticket And Win In California". I'm sure that the title is not a boilerplate guarantee, but it shows the average driver [like me] how things work and how you can get them to work for you.

Yes, I am fighting the case. Will let you know how...and what...I did and how it all was finally deceided once it's over.

Thanks for a great site and resource!

Sweet. Fighting tix is in the top two reasons people come here, and we always love to hear of real experiences and how they turn out. I hope we are of some help to you. Definitely time to buy a jammer though!

and to answer your question about laser guns being problematic - a laser gun will never give a FALSE reading when aimed at a target. It either gives you the correct reading, or no reading at all.

Lets say the cop is shooting lidar at a heck of an angle. The cosine error can only work in your favor (the cop's gun will register a slower speed than you were actually going)

Most laser guns are +- 1mph accurate

The distance he tagged you at may be unacceptable - I believe in some states, lidar tickets are invalid if you were tagged at over 1000 feet

I have the book, it's great, my kids will be reading it before they even start driving.

This is not accurate look into slip effect it has been proven to give readings an extra 5-10 mph sometimes

    Hi ub!,

Well, according to the book, it is problematic. here's the skinny; you decide!

Laser detectors measure distance [between car and the gun] using the speed of light, reflected off the target vehicle to return. The detector takes about 40 of these distant measurements over 1/3rd of a second! It then divides the lights round trip distance by the time, to get the drivers speed.

For the measurement to be absolutely accurate, the officer has to hold the beam on the SAME part of the car during the test. However, its impossible to make sure that the laser beam [which the officer cannot see] continuously hits the same spot.

When the beam moves from one spot on an oncoming car --like the windshield-- to a closer spot-- like the front bumper, a few feet ahead of the windshield this will add about 4 feet [depending upon car/truck model] to the total distance during the 1/3 second measurement.

So, as far as the laser is concerned, the car appears to have traveled faster that it really has. Follow me?

If the laser gun read 4 feet per 1/3 second, or 12 feet per ONE second [remember your math now] or 8 MPH too high.

So, in the final analysis, the operator of the gun must hold that beam [which is invisible!] perfectly straight on the same spot on the car, for the gun to work properly and give an accurate reading.

Then how did my truck, which was parked in the driveway, give me a reading of 10 MPH when I fired my Stalker at it this evening to check and see if my jammer heads were firing?

The house down the street was also moving away from me a 7 MPH!!!
