Welcome to the forum. You made a poor decision buying your friend a Cobra. They are the worst radar detectors. Return it and buy something else.

Sounds like your friend just screwed you. I'd suggest depending on your budget I'd get a radar in this order:

    <$200 - Refurbished Escort 8500 X50(sell radar first)
<$300 - Use Escorts Cash for Clunkers program(send that radar to them and get an 80 dollar credit) and get yourself a new 8500 X50 off their website
<$400 - Sell it and buy yourself a Valentine One
    <$500 - Still get a Valentine One
    <$600 - Get yourself an STI-R
    >$1600 - Escort 9500ci

On a lighter note. Welcome. What part of Texas are you from?

    Hi. Welcome to the forums.

You might want to look on the Cobra website for a manual for your XRS9690. they have many of the manuals available free for download as PDF files. I looked and did not find a manual for that particular model but there were manuals for the 9600, 9630, 9640, and 9645. They are probably pretty similar to the 9690. I personally don't know much at all about that model of RD.

I won't address whether or not Cobra RDs are good or bad. I have owned two and never had any problem with them. I don't consider them to be great but they worked ok for my situation at the time. But I don't use them now.

You will likely receive a lot of comments and opinions about Cobra and other RD. Many will be critical of Cobra. Some will advise you to get certain models of RD.

My recommendation is that you may want to consider using your 9690 to learn on while you look around. The compass function has nothing to do with RD so it is not critical for that. My opinion is that any RD is better than none at all.

There are lots of RD reviews on this site, and others, and lots and lots of opinions.

Personally, I am a fan of Whistler and Escort RD. They serve me well. I currently use both a Whistler XTR695SE and PRO78 SE. And an Escort 9500ix. I use the Whistlers primarily on the highway and the 9500ix in town for the redlight camera detection capabilities and I like the blue display.

Basically, what I suggest is that you consider what you need in a RD based on your area, what types of enforcement are in place in that area, and how and what you drive. No need buying something you don't need. For example, if you are concerned about stealth, you may want to consider a Beltronics STI or Escort Redline. If redlight or speed cameras are of concern, you may want to get a RD that detects those. Etc. Etc. Etc. Do your research, ask questions, get advice, go to the RD websites and read about their RD. Then make a decision. You may want to get more than one RD such as I have done.

Just my opinion but I hope it helps.

    Good luck and again, welcome.

Welcome to the forum. What part of Texas?

Here's the owner's manuals for Cobra Radar Detectors: Cobra Electronics Product Manuals Detectors

The xrs 9690 is not listed, but hopefully a manual for one of the similar models will answer your questions.

In this business you get what you pay for. If you pay $60 for a used Cobra expect $60 dollars worth of performance. If you buy a Valentine One expect $400 worth of performance. Period.
