    Default Hello!

    Hello,
My name is Fernando. I purchased a Cobra XRS-9930 about two years ago, but the LCD on this unit is extremely dim. Does anyone know if is possible to buy a replacement LCD? I called Cobra customer service, and they said that they don't sell any.

I am also in the process of saving up for a new radar detector, most likely a V1. I've been thinking about purchasing a used one, but I would like to know anyone's experience with buying a used V1, or if I should just invest in a brand new one.

Welcome to the forum. Here is what I would do:

    1. Junk or sell the Cobra. It is garbage. Do not invest any more money into it.

    2. If you are going to buy a V1, buy a brand new one not a used one. You don't know how well a used V1 will work.

Yeah, I suppose it is junk. I've been pulled over in the past going 85 on the highway with this thing.

    Thanks for your input.

Sorry about your ticket; do you know if the ticket issued via laser or radar?

I'd strongly encourage the V1 purchase. You can get a refurb directly from V1. I'd retire the Cobra ASAP.

Sorry to hear about your ticket, but like others have said, the Cobra isn't a very good detector.

If you call VR and ask for a returned V1, they give you a break on the price and it's just as good as a new one. You might have to wait a week or two to get it though.

    Are the refurbished ones upgraded?

I believe the officer that pulled me over used a laser. I remember seeing a police officer parked on the bridge I was passing under, so I slowed down to speed limit. I just remember the Cobra calling out a warning I hadn't heard before, but I remember as soon as I heard that noise, I saw a different police car turn on his lights, and pulled me over.

I remember him telling me, "That radar detector didn't work as intended, eh?"

That was probably an overpass laser speed trap. Only defense against laser is a laser jammer.

Since you are located in Austin, there is an outside chance that the officer who shot you may have been Fritter. He is a member of this forum.

That would be pretty funny, but I was pulled over in Schertz, TX. I drive from Austin, TX to San Antonio, TX about 4 times a month, so I should really just invest in a good detector and jammer. That ticket was half the price of a new V1 anyway.

Agreed. You know what to do. Ask us for tips on the details. Get a decent detector V1, 9500ix or STI-driver, plus a good jammer Blinder or LI. Lot's of info on these choices here.
