    Smile Newbie

    Hello from a Newbie

Looking for a way to keep my lead foot from getting me in trouble. Seems it may be contagious Dad and siblings have the same problem.

I just got hit in Connecticut and was not stopped but think I may see something in the mail. How would I know?

    Thanks
    Sue

Wecome aboard. The group here is more than willing to help. tell us where you do most of your driving (interstate, city, rural, etc), how fast you like to drive, what threats you encounter (radar, laser, redlight cameras, etc) and what type of car you drive (model and color) and we can amke recommendations to best keep you out of trouble.

Thanks for the warm welcomes I live in Mass, but travel through much of N.E., California and hope to drive down to N.C. Can a detector read my inspection sticker to find out my reg info? I do not have a front plate... only rear so far. I did not see the officer swing around and noone stopped me. DO I assume I will get something in the mail? The jerk was at the bottom of a hill... of course... so I got knabbed while the car was gaining momentum. Any knowledge would be greatly appreciated

Unless it was a speed camera you are OK. they have license palte readers that can read the license plate.

If you drive a lot in Mass I believe lidar is a big threat. To minimize your threats you will need a good radar detector and laser jammers for lidar.

Red light cameras and speed cameras just use a camera or video system to record your license plate when you pass. Someone reviews the film and then sends a ticket to the registered owner.

Some patrol cars have license plate readers that read the license plate numbers and compare them to a database that has stolen car info, oustanding warrants, etc.

Lidar is just a speed measuring device that uses a laser beam the officer points at your car to determine your speed.

A good radar detector will cost you $200 to $500 and laser jammers run $350 to $1400 defending on size of vehicle and whether front and rear protection is needed.

Since the weather is getting cold up north the likelyhodd is right now radar is the bigger threat (they can operate it from the warmth of the car). laser needs a direct line of sight so it's harder (but not impossible) to shoot through the windows. For this reason I would start with a radar detector and then move to jammers as the budget allows.

foolish question.. can it be argued against? How accurate? Do they have to be calibrated on a regular basis?

Oh yes, see the how to beat your ticket section for a lot of ideas on how to beat a ticket in Mass. Seems a lot of people there eventually show up here after they get a ticket.

Sue - I know cameras are an issue in the area you live, and they are in California too. As is laser.

It seems you need a few countermeasures in your arsenal:
    1) A good Radar Detector
    2) A good GPS detector for the cameras
    3) A good laser jammer for your primary vehicle (you can't move this from car to car).

There is a lot of info on all of these here. But here are some starters:
    1) For Radar and Camera warnings the best in class solutions are either Passport 9500ix which is an all in one solution for both of these threats, or getting a V1/STI/Redline for the Radar and a Cheetah C50 for the cameras. Radar detectors aren't good at warning for cameras so a Cheetah C50 or an all-in-one GPS/radar device like the 9500ix is a must. I use a 9500ix for travel since it is better to only have one device in your suitcase, and in my primary car I have a 9500ci which is in my opinion the best radar/GPS device on the market.

    2) On the Laser Jammers - you should look at the Guys of Lidar site. There are 2 brands which really stand out and provide great protection. Most radar hits are from the front so you rear jammers are less of a priority. Some people use a radar detector and hope to pick-up laser, but that is unwise as when you pick it up you have usually been hit and its game over.

Hope this helps. Welcome to the group.
