A client suggested I check out this forum, and he was right. Hello all !
Way back when, I got the first Escort. Expensive and shipped in a big plastic box. Since then, I've had state of the art on my dash. Sometimes the car was worth less than the detectors. I never went looking for more info, as working with the National Motorist's Association, we'd have "guys of lidar" type sessions once a year or so, and since 1990 or so, I'd played with all the gadgets. I had a lidar a year ago, and used it to get an idea of what LEO sees. I even used it to measure my trees in the backyard for my ham radio antennas.
I remember x band and Escort. Constant transmission for 1 or 2 miles. No door openers or falses. My first K band hit was on a ski trip to Vermont, and unfortunately, it was live. Life before "instant on" was much more mellow, even with an Escort.
I still to this day see escort/passport (the great cassette sized one) on dashboards in NY, even tho everyone pretty much is on Ka band with Stalkers. False sense of security.
Settled on V1, Blinder and an Icom 7000 for scanner/cb reception, mounted in an E46. My ham call is K2FIX (Casey to fix)
My job takes me from Albany to Montauk, fighting speeding tickets. I love my job, and spin about 30k per year under the car. After 15 years, I know too much about NY speeding tickets. I always get a kick out of reading "the story", as the result varies by Town, City or sometimes cop. (There's no "free", and the cop will not apoligize and give you gas money).
A few observations:
Be Nice. Don't fail the roadside stop. There are symbols for "attitude".
Sports Cars go first. Rich Guys go second. Everyone else goes third.
Most Ticketing is random roadside selection, subject to #2.
If you drive fast with friends and you all have nice cars, some jealous soul in a Pinto will pick up the cell to call you in.
Every state is different. Some things transfer and some don't. It is a hodgepodge, and I'm still learning. I love this site already...My M25 is dead and I'm going for the M27 shortly.
