Found this site and been lurking around a bit. My first radar detector was a Cobra ESD 9200, which has worked pretty well IMO (got it for free brand new. handful of saves throughout it's use). Still running strong and only problems I've had is a blown speaker which was an easy fix (new speaker from Cobra shipped for $6), suction cup replacement, and broken power cord. The thing has sat under the sun for years with no major problems.
I haven't used it in a while and am now looking for a replacement since I have moved away from school and see the need for one now. I know the new Cobras are crap and would definitely not buy one. I need something that will last and will not have me having to send it off to the manufacturer for repairs or issues. I don't have time to deal with that.
I've locked it down to 3 units: Beltronics 955, Beltronics 995, or Whistler Pro78SE. I've done a lot of research so these are the final 3 contenders. I'm trying to keep it on a budget so no V1, 8500, 9500, RX65, GX65 etc. (maybe some day hopefully). Mostly Ka use in my area. Only K bad hits are off those "your speed" signs. Never been hit by X. I'm debating if I really need the features of the 995 vs. 955 since the 955 has a No X city mode so I would just keep it in that mode all the time. Does city affect K/Ka/Laser? From what I've read no, but just double checking.
Anyone have any experience with warranty matters and customer service with Beltronics? The only problem I've heard about these units (along with some other Bel/Escort models) is they have calibration issues (such as from overheating).
I know the 995 has a some more features (TSR, tech display, band defeat, etc) than the 955. I also heard the 995 has a upgradeable processor/memory or something, but wasn't 100% sure. Anyone notice and QUALITY/RELIABILITY difference between the two units?
I was also looking at Whistler Pro78SE as they have exceptional customer service and a 3 year warranty. The only thing that is keeping me from Whistler is the issues with X band being disabled and then being reported as K band (that's got to be a pain. no X band use in California or at least in the areas i travel in), false alarms, and some KA detection issues. What are the best ways to cut down on false alarms? Has the problem with X/K band confusion been fixed yet?
So just wondering what problems people have experienced with these 3 models and how they perform.
Sorry if it's a lot of stuff, but if I do buy one of these three, I want the thing to last for a while with minimum amount of service.
Thanks in advance and glad to be aboard
