Default Hi from Pennsylvania - PLEASE recommend a RADAR DETECTOR

Hi guys. I am new to this forum, and definitely new to the world of radar detectors.

I am about to purchase a radar detector but I don't know where to start. I am not familiar with the jargon and and what brands are good or bad.

Can anybody recommend a good and affordable radar detector for me?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Asking a question like that on a place like this is bound to start a fight as everyone has there own opinion. Me personally prefer the Valentine 1. If you call and say you want a 30 day return unit its $359 (i wish i knew that when i bought mine) as far as the jargon just ask outer do a search

As far as "affordable" that depends on your definition of affordable. I'm a big believer in, you get what you part for, and any good detector is going to be a little pricey.

What do you consider affordable? Beltronics Vector 985 or 955 is pretty good bang for the buck on K band. I would recommend the Valentine 1 in PA, it should serve you well, if you can afford it.

V1, several hundred saves in and it costs less than 2 tickets; so extremely affordable within context. Just remember it's a tool not a safety net, so it won't prevent all stops, you'll need a layered system for that.

I've always heard Valentine 1 for Pennsylvania as well... not going to be the cheapest, but it will likely be the best to suit your needs.

Are you from eastern PA or western PA? Or right in the middle?

Welcome! Remember a Rd is just one tool and not a free pass to speed when you like! With lidar and Instant-on radar, your chances are very low. I hope your not one who just wants the Rd to beep to tell you to slow within a reasonable time, does not work that way. With false alarms you must spend time to learn and know the do's and don'ts of safe speeding which takes time and interest. Check out "guys of lidar" on the web and do not get a cheap RD, pay now or pay later for you will pay sooner or later with any RD......(19 years with a Valentine and no paying ticket, knock on wood!).....

Thanks for all the responses... you guys are all great.

I live in Philadelphia and I have to travel long distances, usually at night time. Actually, I need radar detector to keep myself in check, rather than to violate any law. Sometimes I get a little distracted (which I should not be) and DO NOT pay attention to my odometer.

I want to the detector to help me build a good habit and keep my speed in check.

I keep hearing the Valentine 1, so I guess i will lean that way.
    Thanks for your advice.

BTW, only the state cops in PA use radar. Just about any non GPS RD will be annoying and therefore useless in the city. Keep only K and KA band on in PA, turn on all bands when in NJ.
