Decided to join up after seeing a lot of good info on here, mostly looking at the CB side of things. I do have an old Cobra detector which is old and I assume obsolete? Since I do not have a road trip partner, I 'invested' in a cheapo (WallyWorld) Cobra 19 Ultra 3.
I know there is a better place to ask this, but I figured why not since I'm already typing and on slowwwwwwwwww internet.
Everything is all set up. SWR around 1.6 on 1 and 40, <1.1 on 20, Cobra powered mic, all else is stock (though the VM pot was already pretty far open when I checked it out). I can hear people fine (I nearly pi$$sed myself when I found out 6 is called 'superbowl'), but after driving a bunch around town near the highway for a while asking for radio checks, I received one response which was reported as good from opposing lanes, but 'tinny' from ~1/2 mile (before purchasing power mic - problem addressed?).
I know the CB hobby isnt what it used to be. Is the lack of responses due to that and 'legitimate' CBers using sideband or other methods of communication?
