    Default Hello from Durham, NC

    Hey there,

Found an old Escort radar detector in a junk pile few month ago, and decided to solder up a cigarette lighter to it and sure enough IT WORKED!s-l1600.jpg

I travel 1.5 hr to school using I-85, I-40, and the thing is firing off pretty good!

I have the selector flipped to "highway"

    Maybe K band?

Wanted to get on a forum and learn some new things......

    Thanks,

Guess they dont use KA on the interstates through here! She fires off on the drive to school using 40 and 85. Went off on a little highway near home today and sure enough, again, a trooper came by a few minutes later.... she's staying in my car

I-40 and I-80 are in the NC area. Go to RDforum.org and find your state under the map listing on what Leos use which mostly Ka (MPH 33.8 Ka, Stalker 34.7 Ka, Decatur and Kustom 35.5 Ka) with LIDAR (laser) which your Escort is blind to. K band is about 5-8% and X band is localized and rare. Note: most K bands alerts are non radar these days. You have so much to learn but do have fun with the Escort XK.

State Trooper's don't run K band radar in NC. They only use Ka, mostly Kustom Signals 35.5 with some new Stalker 34.7 thrown in the mix. Some municipalities run 33.8 and K, but the state is phasing K band out. There is no X band in NC, not approved anyway. The state stopped training and certifying X band operators a few years back because of budget cuts.

I can assure you, you didn't pick up a trooper running K band. If you saw a trooper and not a local after getting a K band alert then you picked up a false alert possibly from a nearby car and seeing the trooper was a coincidence. Troopers don't run constant on radar hardly ever anyway. If your detector doesn't have Ka band capability then you are running a huge risk using it.
