Default Laser Speed Enforcement in South Africa -Photolaser

As requested by Veil Guy ,here are some pics of equipment currently in use in South Africa. This piece of equipment is provided to City Traffic Police by a Korean company who set up shop in South Africa. It is supplied at no charge with the agreement that a percentage of fines issued goes to this Korean company. This percentage is as large as 60 -70% (I am in the wrong business!!) Pls note that vehicles are targeted on the rear on this pic
Here is the URL to the Korean company for product specs: ohsunginc.com

This is a pic of the laptop which stores the images, speed reading etc

Close up pic of unit-note it makes use of a LTI 2020 Marksman

Traffic police hiding on the side of the road - Note: Cooler bags as its going to be a long day - Targeting the front of motor vehicles, cars are driven on the left hand side of the road same as the UK.

I use a Blinder M40 to counter this unit.My rear sensors are installed in the rear bumper.Old Blinder M10 also effectively counters this unit.
The Bel 904/905 /ZR3 rear sensor is absolutely futile against this unit. The Lidatek M20 sensors are worse-no front nor rear function in this scenario.

    Speedpro,

What I don't understand here is how this unit actually operates in Sud-Afrika.

I would like to know if the unit is constantly firing at a specified distance/focal -point are is there some other mechanism for determining when a vehicle is at a particular point and speeding.

Judging by the picture, the focal point appears at just about 200m and the cosine angle looks pretty healthy here. I would think some laser countermeasures would do well here, even though the rear is being targeted.

    Thanks for the post.

The cop has the option to take a photo with the unit next to the gun itself. If the person is speeding, the speed reading AND a photo of the car/plate is taken. It is mostly used so that you can't say it wasn't your car that was targetted.

I see. I got the impression from speedpro that there may be some automation to this thing.

Am I correct in understanding that this setup still requires an operator to actually trigger the device?

    Answer to the questions posted:
This unit can be operated on 2 modes-manual or automatic
In manual mode the unit is operated by the officer and can be focussed at any of the lanes and if the vehicle is above the speed limit it automatically takes a digital photograph of the numberplate. This unit was granted approval to operate in SA only in this mode (human operated)
In automatic mode this unit is focussed at only 1 of the 3 lanes @ approx 148 metres (485 ft).If a vehicle is exceeding the speed limit at the point where the laser is focussed it records the numberplate.I imagine that in this mode the laser is permanently on.No operator required.Interesting case here is that if a person is caught exceeding the limit while the unit is in automatic mode there is no way owner of the vehicle can prove that this was the case. No justice here!! For additional spec pls look at

To me this is a slendid example of how out of control the Politicians in conjunction with Law Enforcement have gotten ( probably in ever part of the world) with "Speed Enforcement".
This is not about "Public Saftey" this is a pure "Cash Grab".
The lastest technology to catch people "speeding".
Exceeding the posted speed limit....indeed...The Crime of The Century.
I understand that South African cities have very high crime rates. Maybe the Cops should focus on that rather than trying to catch some poor sole exceeding the speed limit by 20 KPH or 15 MPH.
Thanks for the post, but this just disgusts me.

Jo'burg has [historically] been considered one of the most dangerous cities in the world, short of a war zone, unfortunately.

    Kidnappings and carjackings routinely happen.

Speedpro's comments sound very Orwellian, indeed - he was off by about 20 years.

Speedpro, your accusations that the Escort shifter zr3 is futile against the LTI Marksman is a lie... I have yet to receive a ticket and have always been targeted from behind so far... Have u got proof? Results?

The ZR3 is very effective in SA. Both from the front and rear. Presently it is the best priced as well....
