    Default need an FCC license?

i know this is totally bogus, just wanted to share. i was speaking with a local cop tonight and he told me i could be fined $20,000 for having my laser jammer because it's a transmitter. any idea where he'd get off saying such a thing? it was a friendly conversation, mind you, but still an interesting one (he was providing security at my firm's party).

No you don't need an FCC license to operate a laser jammer. It all should part 15. I guess those Radar Hot wheel guns are illegal too since they transmit

Sounds like a scare tactic to keep you from using them.

Laser jammers don't transmit RF, they transmit IR (infrared), just like your TV remote control (only more powerful).

IR isn't regulated by the FCC.

The Hot Wheels radar gun is part 15, no license required. Only part 90 devices (most police radar units) require a license.

RADAR jammers, on the other hand, are illegal per FCC rules.

see, if i wasn't "inebriated", i would have told him that that's the same as telling me i need an FCC license to use my remote control...

yeah, i figure he was just trying to discourage use... or confusing it with a radar jammer.

Probably the latter. I think many people, LEOs included, use the terms "radar" and "laser" interchangeably, or interpret one to mean the other.

They read "radar jammers are illegal", and interpret it as "jammers are illegal" even if it's laser.

It might have been for second reason, but with the recent dealings I've had to the police, they don't have a problem telling half-truths or even straight lies about the law to scare you into not doing something.

Or LEOs and news articles that describe the use of "laser radar".

Half these clowns do not even know the law they are supposed to be enforcing.
