I got a ticket as described above with some interesting circumstances. I'm from out of state and was rounding a bend on the highway and nestled in a cluster of cars. The curve of the road was fairly sharp and to the right and I was in the middle lane shifting to the outside as all of us were coming around the bend. I'm sure many have experienced driving amongst a cluster of cars...almost like driving in formation.
We were all doing about the same speed within a mile or two of each other. Suddenly my V1 and LPP alarms go off as all of us continued around the curved highway to reveal a state trooper sitting perpendicular to the road on the right with his laser gun pointed out the side window. I glanced over at him as we passed thinking I had nothing to worry about. But watching in the rear view mirror, he pulled out behind us and got on my tail and pulled me over.
He said he clocked me doing 72 in a 50 mph zone. If I was, then all the cars were doing around 67 or more. He was one of those cops who behaves like a machine. He didn't talk to me or ask any questions except for my license and registration. He gave me a ticket and went through a scripted speech about how to handle the summons. I wished him a good day and off he went. The ticket was for $195.
So I'm wondering a few things. First, I did not know the speed limit was 50 and there was so much traffic I was just going with the flow anyway. It was really too congested to intentionally drive faster than all the other cars without being a jerk about it. I thought the speed limit was 65.
Second, I don't believe he got a reading on my car. He would have had to shoot me first and to do that he would have to aim between at least 3 or 4 other cars to single me out. It all happened in seconds. I think he clocked the entire group and singled me out because I'm driving a bright shiny blue 350Z in immaculate condition on a sunny day.
Plus, I have a laser jammer that works unless LPP's have become obsolete. Mine has the latest firmware and I was lased three times earlier in the day without issue.
So I'm really not upset at getting the ticket although under the circumstances I think it was a bit of an insult. It's more just wanting to understand what really happened.
