While the AL vs. DS threads, with a bowl of popcorn, are pretty good entertainment, they don't venture too far beyond that. However, what they have done is occasionally bring out some nice feature requests to the surface.
I thought it would be interesting to have a thread dedicated to what we (us consumers) would like to see in a laser jammer system. Perhaps Blinder, Lidatek, et. al. might even sit up and take notice, but really, I'm more interested in what the more senior members of thie board would consider valuable, or why they believe something wouldn't be worthwhile.
As a hopeful anti-flammage mechanism, this not a place for vendors to say they do/will support something, or that their competitors don't deliver a particular feature. Vendors should feel free to discuss why they think something is or isn't viable. Please see this response from The_Veil_Guy as a perfect model on how a vendor should conduct themselves.
The big one that's come up, is user initiated upgrades. Consumer internet routers figured this one out early. I want to be able to download a new flash (or whatever) image to my latop, connect it to my jammer control unit (perhaps via USB) to upload that image to my jammer. Being able to easily have the latest stable software release on my system is incredibly powerful. Hell, I'd even pay a [reasonable] download fee to get new features. Bug fixes should, of course, be supplied free.
The other thing I'd like to do is get data back out of the system. For example, I'd [again] like to connect my laptop to the system, and have it tell me (in real time) what gun it thinks it's encountered, and the specifics of the encounter (pulse rate, etc). This would be really interesting to correlate with GPS information.
Configurable auto-shutoff. The Lidatek powers off after <n> seconds of jamming, and waits 30 seconds to recycle. While some don't like that at all, I like the spirit of the feature, and would prefer a unit I purchase to do it. However, I dislike like the factory values of the Lidatek. I'd love to have a jammer that jams for 9 seconds, and only waits 12 seconds before recycling.
A configurable default gun type. In another discussion it came out that some systems just match pulse rate or unknown guns. I'd prefer to be able to pick how my system responds to a unkown. Either matching pulse rate, attempt to jam a particular gun even if it didn't match something the system knows about (i.e. if a look-up fails, assume it's a LTI Ultralyte gun), or a user selectable pulse rate.
Finally, figure out a way to daisy chain transceivers or control boxes. If I want 3 LIDAR tranceivers in the front, and 2 in the back, and someone else wants 2 up front and 1 in the back, and a third person wants 4 front, 2 on each side, and 4 in the back -- that should be doable.
