    Red face Police know anything?

So last night I was driving to a store to pick up a late night movie to watch and as I turn into the parking lot see big red and blue lights come on behind me. After the initial explitives that come with a pull over the officer walks to the window. I guessed why, because of my rear laser shield I have and how dark it is. The cop preceeds to tell me he couldn't even see my plate (which isn't true) and thats why he pulled me over. He then told me "I know why you have these, I know they block the red light camera's and stop them from giving you tickets..." I was a little confused I thought thats why they came out with the new Blur plate cover for that not that everyone of them would. But I do have G4 on my plate cover and its pretty dark. I did not get a ticket he just told me to take it off. I thought the law said it has to be able to be seen a 100 feet away during the DAY??! Clarification! and is the cop right about the plate covers blocking all cameras? Also is veiling the inside of your cover just as effective as doing the outside or is it less effective because it doesn't have the direct connection with the laser RF transmission? Thanks guys.

Sounds like an impulsive stop. I doubt that LEO was thinking it through very well.

VEIL works on the inside or outside just as well. If it's on the inside the outside surface seems to look a lot better. My rear plate cover is pretty dark as well but I haven't caught any grief over it yet.

You'd be very surprised what the well-informed LEOs know...

Luckily, very few local cops are among the well-informed. Many think they are well informed, but, like this guy, what he *thinks* he knows is erroneous. It would have been funny to tell him, straight up, "No, you dumbass. It's to block lidar. It does nothing for red light cameras." But that would be giving TMI, lol.

Previous discussion here has indicated that Veil on the inside of the shield is less effective than on the outside.

Since you tell us NOTHING about where you are, none of us can even begin to speculate what the laws in your state or locality are, so your specific question cannot be answered. Traffic laws are not nationally standardised, ya know. It might be 100 feet during the day. It might be fifty feet at night. It might not even be a law at all. Don't take anyone's word for it. Google it for your specific state.

Sounds like FL, which from my memory is 100 feet (whenever) and all letter's including "Florida" and the county have to be visible. I.e. most of the frames are technically illegal in Florida.

In GA and NC that I know of it's illegal to knowingly cover a liscense plate for the purpose of defeating cameras. The laser shields are not illegal as far as I know here in GA since they they do not block the view of the cameras (at least I don't think they do).

The two cops that stopped me seemed to know what the camera plates were for. I took them off after the second stop since it can be a $1000 fine here in GA and there is some question as to how effective they are against the newer camera systems.

Sorry I thought I mentioned it but I am in UT and these Leo's (like many!) like to think they are the law ha ha. Here is a link I found stating only in the daylight it needs to be visible, Utah Code Section 41-1a-403 . So this would tell me I could cover it with Veil and as long as I could read all that is needed during the day I could drive around fine at night. But I am sure as a driver I am almost always wrong in the eyes of a Police officer. Opinions and ideas?

Being in compliance with the law doesn't necessarily make any difference in whether or not you get a ticket. That's what the courts are for, to sort it all out. But the cops know that and don't care. They know that, whether you get it thrown out or not, it still cost you a lot of time and money to dot, as well as the time it cost you on the side of the road. After all that, being "right" is a very small consolation.

That's why I won't use a Veiled or tinted plate cover. It simply stands out and screams to every officer that you are trying to get away with something. You can't wave that in their faces and then be surprised when they hassle you for it.

It's up to you whether or not the hassle is worth the minimal protection a Veiled plate cover offers you.

I have to agree, that's why I bought the 4 head LI. I already draw enough attention driving a red Vette, no nead to give them another reason to look at me.

But next time I think I will get yellow as red does not stand out quite enough.
